Don't bother with the prebuilt or upgrading it. Its just a waste. The 9800xt requires a fast processor, P3/Athalon or higher, i think. It also requires a seperate/additional plug into your power supply from your motherboard power plug. Eh, if you wna tme to find specs for the perfect dream gamer computer, give me the info on kinda what you want, and what pricerange.
All i need from you guys is to tell me the pros and cons of a prebuilt machine.
Pros) 1. Usually comes with a blanket warranty covering parts and even labor for some period of time. 2. Often includes extra software in the bundle that you would pay more for had you built your own. 3. Customer support (some people cant live without this)
Cons) 1. You wont learn much about building one if you buy it complete. 2. Some companies take steps to prevent you from upgrading or modifying the machine. ( locked bios, non-compliant power supplies, operating system stored on seperate partition, etc, etc.) 3. A ****load of pure garbage is usually pre-installed on all systems. Sometimes removing it can be a problem, or even imposssible without messing up the OS.
Theres really nothing complicated in building your own pc. Its just a matter of snapping some parts into sockets and tightening a screw or clip down. Almost any component you buy will come with a simple explanation of how to install it. Your motherboard should come with a manual explaining in detail where everything goes. Installing the OS and all your apps and drivers without conflicts can be a bit of an ordeal if youve never done it before. But its all part of the learning process and in the end you'll be alot smarter and knowledgable when someone you know says "Whats a CPU? Or how do I install a firewall?"
The best part about building your own, besides the knowledge you'll gain, is that YOU get to pick whats best.
Type "Motherboard Reviews" "CPU Reviews" "Hard Drive Reviews" and such into google and just read everything you can. Go to alot of different sites, they all might say something different about the same hardware but you'll pick up fast on what sounds good to you and what doesnt. Hardware forums are awesome!
Ignore benchmarks. Companies tune their hardware and drivers to get good benches but that doesnt mean that $500 video card will look or play any better than a cheaper model that is also well built. I can barely tell the difference in graphics between my 3 year old Radeon 8500 and my 1 year old 9800 pro even though the 9800 has way more fps and about 10,000 more points at 3dMark.
One last piece of advice. That new, super fast computer is gonna grow old quick. Your better off letting the newest hardware on the market age for a bit to see how it actually does and what revisions will come from it. Everyone runs out to grab the newest, fastest, thing their is and then kicks themselves when it turns out to be a bomb. The GeFroce FX series comes to mind.
Why no I'm not, I'm a even smaller fan of HL2 hell of most gamers on this forum. Give me the Unreal 3 engine anyday
OK firstly Milail or wateva... if you aint a HL2 fan, please, kindly remove yourself from this forum before a big crowd of torch burning, pitchfork wielding fans come after you, like me for instance
OK ditch, link. I AM A STUPID IDEOT. Before i even knew much about PC's i went and bought a fricken pre built.... man this sux. Even more so that im paying it off over 2 years! Ok, i think what ill do is get the money, pay if off then sell it. Although you dont get much for a pc do you? Man im confused, i wish id just started building a premade right from the start, but i knew nothing of them then.... :( What should i do? If you guys could rate my prebuild, that would give me at least a small amount of confidence or happiness (bearing in mind i wanna play HL2) *P4 2.66 Processor *1024 DDR Ram *FX 5600 (YUCK!) *40gig HD (Nevamind) I have posted these specs before but never really got any feedback on them. What vid card would best suit this comp? I was hoping for the Radeon 9800 but im not too sure. OK HERES WHAT I WANT MY PREBUILT TO BE! *Athlon/AMD wateva 3.4ghz *200gig HD *1gig + RAM *Geforce 6800/ATi x800 vid card (but like ditch said these will be obsolete soon) Mmmmkay. To conclude i pretty much want to get rid of my Prebuilt and start building my custom PC, but i dont want to lose too much money. BTW Link im willing to spend $3000 on it, (Thats 1000 quid i think?) So.... what do i do???? Cheerz again guys....
Hey btw, thanks ditch, i never thought of typing those reviews in google! Theyre quite good
It depends what you mean by big fan. If you mean do i watch every HL2 video available everynight before sleeping and dreaming up more funny manipulator stories then yes i am a big BIG sad fan of HL and HL2.
So i don't know. How big a fan are you?
Well i got this callendar hanging on my wall, and i cross everyday off with a special half life merchandise pen. Only this pen may cross the days off as it beholds half lifes power and will.... LOL nah im not that nerdy. Im just waiting. I need to upgrade anyways so i wont be able to play it for ages...
Yeah everything Xcon said is good although I like Western Digital over Maxtor, I like Kingston or Corsair for memory and I would reccomend Logitech for input divices such as keyboard, mouse, game pads and joysticks, and speakers. Yeah and no LCD monitors unless your spending atlease $800.
I hpoe everything go's well with your new computer. PM me if you need any advice or help with it ;).
Hey. Welcome back the dead forum. lol. Yay 100 posts as of this point. Oh and BTW Apok. Scroll down the threads page. You really have a thing for ending threads. lol.
