**ORIGINAL MESSAGE SENT BY ME** Hi Gabe,
My name is Nik, i'm 17 and live in New Zealand (And I think I must be about the only gamer in this country!) I'm not going to ask you anything about the game like most other people. My question regards a career in the gaming industry.
Soon I will be going to Police accademy here in New Zealand and eventually trained as an AOSA(Armed Offenders Squad Agent, the equivelent of SWAT in the USA) Although this is what I have wanted to do for a long time, and indeed it would be fun, but my real dream career is to be a game designer.
How did you get into the gaming industry? What sort of courses did you take? I don't think there is much opportunity in New Zealand to follow this career so I probably would have to move to the U.S or Australia or somewhere, where the opportunity is better. Any help or advice you could give me would be
very much appriciated.
By the way, nice job on Half life 2. I definatly will be buying it the first day it comes out, i think it is a whole new revolutionary design in the FPS gaming genre being able to interact with the environment and surroundings. The whole game looks amazing, I really do hope i will be amazed at it.
Kind regards, Nik.
**MESSAGE FROM GABE** Hi, Nik.
Robin Walker and John Cook are two people whose paths into the game industry may be a model for you. They were from Australia, and came to the gaming industry's attention by developing Team Fortress, originally a MOD for Quake. It's the best combination of useful game development experience and resume builder I can think of. And it has the added bonus that many of the MOD teams are geographically distributed, so your residence in New Zealand is no more of an issue than if you lived in the US or Europe.
Good luck, Gabe
*So there you have it guys, an email from the man himself. I know its not relevant to HL2 much, but its still cool. Im not allowed to post his email address on the forums, but if you want it, PM me.
Wow, words from the man himself - If he doesn't reply to the next one, get your SWAT team buddies to kick the fluff out of him!
Yeah! (and tape it so we can watch it).
Hehehe. Seriously though, i have handled or fired most types of weapons that are in NZ. From AUG's to C9's to LAWS
