It's the greek letter "Lambda". Hence the "Lambda Core" level in HL1
Lambada= Wavelength or the halflife symbol.
Im prettey sure the λ in the Half-Life symbol is the decay constant of exponential decay, which is used to find out the half-life of a radioactive substance.
