If you want extreme realism, then buy Red Orchestra. If you want realism but more fun, get Day of Defeat. If I were you I'd get Day of Defeat because of the constant updates and larger community.

Day of Defeat is like CS:S in WW2. Red Orchestra(from this point on, referred to as RO) is like BF1942 on steroids. Honestly, I preder RO. Its got the best tank combat I've ever seen in a game, simply due to the armor system. It's also got intense infantry combat, if you are playing an infantry only map. Unfortunately, if you are more of a shooting fan, sometimes RO can dissapoint, because alot of people like to play with tanks. And if a map has tanks, there is virtually no infantry combat(except one or two maps). But the infantry maps are great. The weapons are pretty cool. Was playing Odessa, an all infantry map, and we had to hold a tower. That was the most fun defense ever, even though I lost....... DOD=No tanks, just infantry. Perfect for the FPS fan. Easy to use. Limited weapon selection. Kinda bleh after a while. RO=Best Tank combat ever. Infantry combat is more involved. Super realism. This means, no crosshairs. You have to use Iron sights to be anything near accurate, unless you are good at guessing where you're gun is pointing, as the barrel points in different directions as you look around. Spraypainting in close range is more profitable than DoD. Mg's are a pain to operate, as the barrel overheats, you have to change the barrel, which usually ends up right about when you need to reload, so reloads can be very long. Reloads also have to be done with the bi/tri-pod deployed. A lot more guns than DoD. Has a hit registration system that is more complex than DoD. Shows where you have been shot, and you react accordingly(ie=shot in the leg slows you down a bunch initially, more than getting shot anywhere else). Can be VERY HARD to learn. That's why there's a practice mode..... So, in my opinion, get RO, you will get more bang for your buck. Which reminds me, be carefull with those nades.......the throwing system can be a bit hard to get used to, compared to CS/DoD

i much rather red orchestra. its faster paced than what most people think. the community has grown since the free trial. i bought it. the stock tank maps are great for foot soldiers. they are very important for holding an objective.

Although both have its flaws, RO is still much better than DoD. If you like arcade action (CoD style) it might be safer to get DoD if you like a somewhat more realistic style get RO. I dislike RO's tank combat though it does not feel realistic at all, of course I'm not a tank driver but it just feels clunky and weird while the infantry aspect feels so fluent and natural.
