Trojanman190 The source engine is utilized to the full extent of its meager capabilities to make for a very stylish presentation.

...So far I haven't seen any Doom 3 racing, golfing, or sandbox mods. And Doom 3's physics I definately find inferior to HL2. Dunno, I think Source is okay. You have to remember, the game was supposed to come out ages ago, but went through countless delays, so you're really sort of comparing last year's thechnology to cutting edge state-of-the-art uber tech. And as for the animations being capable of being used in many other games, it was still the HL2 team (to my knowledge) that created it in the first place. Although the graphics are a bit scant compared to Doom 3, the quality of work in every other area of gaming that the HL2 team showed is more impressive than all the eye candy from D3 put together.

Doom 3 has better graphics

IMO Half Life 2 is far better in every other respect.

basicly need to get down the the nitty gritty Graphics: I beleive D3 takes it graphicaly but to a fine point. D3 is all indoor so i dought the engine could run real well in outside "worlds" HL2 is good for basicly both indoor and outdoor scenarios. markings (bullet holes ect): This one goes to HL2 it has way better bullet and blast markings then d3, d3 has just a dark smolder spot for bullet/wall collesions Lighting/Shadows: This one is basicly a stalemate to some point HL2 lighting is top notch where D3 shadows are really good and you see your character shadow as well. Interactions: Again HL2 takes this by a long way. HL2 you can interact with practicly anything D3 with everything beeing so "small" there isnt very much stuff to "interact" with. Story: Ounce again HL2. HL2 from the time of its first HL release has a really great "sit on the edge of your seat" story line d3 just kinda puts you there and says GO THERE! So basicly there both equally good but in my personal opinion i beleive HL2 is better. Not the best but just better then D3

Lol, this just has do with graphics, nothing else, bringing "gameplay" and "story" into this is like bringing religion into an argument, it just complicates things. After having played both games, and beaten them, I have to say that while Doom 3 has better graphics enviroment wise (most of the time, Hell for example), Half Life 2 edges it out a little in character detail. Doom 3's people had hideous hands, but Id software didn't have enough time to fix that...

No one seems to have posted anything hear for a while so I will, Lets chuck some more games into the bag ey? So far we have - Doom 3, Half Life 2,Farcry, now what about we chuck in S.T.A.L.K.E.R and F.E.A.R, Ive watched all the videos for both them games and I have to say WOW! STALKER for its well freedom, none of the AI is scripted they all have there own needs and I think there word is traits?, animals stick in packs, hunt at night, it looks bloody awsome! I think it uses the havok engine as well, not sure. FEAR - Now I can tell this game is going to be good already, they have only released 2 videos I belive, (you can get them from www.gametrailers.com) but when a video of a game makes me jump, that means this bloody game is going to be scary, I reckon twice as scary as doom 3, You know them Japanese horror movies that are on at 11pm? its one of them cross with army stuff :) , think action, blood, guns, more blood, scaryness?, it just looks good ok :naughty: go download the 10 min E3 video, think its around 70 - 100mb. I dont know what engine its using but, sorry that most of that had nothing to do with graphics but I like to share my opinion .

I dont know if this picture is going to work but ill try it anyway :abduct: nice?

Well Doom 3 has more potential because the engine it's self can be expanded much more than HL2 can. As far as having a 512mb Vcard and then setting the quality to "ultra high" this does not change much. I have tried this on a SLI system and a professional designer card (wildcat) that had 512mb on it. It only makes the textures fit into memory so that there is less slow downs and there are only a few places where the textures are improved. A lot of the textures in Doom 3 are unfinished some of them were downscaled so that it could perform well on current technology. I think that if some game maker wants to take the Doom 3 engine and DEV a new game it would be much better looking than what the HL2 engine could create. That’s the nice thing about OpenGL is that it can be modded until the world ends and it can also be upscaled when new OpenGL versions are released (1.8, 2.0+). Personally I would like to see a game that did not have scaled down textures and I do believe that if a game were to be made 100% par with the full capability of what the Doom 3 engine can do we would see texture sizes that would reach 1GB easily. So with my experience and in my opinion Doom 3 has much more capability graphically then HL2. With that said the Doom 3 engine is expensive and time consuming to mod and to update. It also will bring even the most powerful SLI system down to its knees. So I don't think we will see Doom 3 be developed all too much more than it already has. Quake 4 will look a lot like Doom 3 but I will have better optimizations and it will have new methods of implementing higher res textures and lighting with out increasing the texture size all to much.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge about mods. Most modders are still trying to gain enough experience before working on bigger mods. Go to Doom 3 World and you'll see many, many TCs in progress, and most look great. I was disappointed though that Doom 3: Hell on Earth Mod closed. Going back on topic, yeah I've been to the STALKER forums, and seen some of the pics there. A lot of them look practically lifelike, maybe even a little better than D3s and Hl2's (Heresy obviously :D )

Not to burst someone's bubble... but hey, I think Half Life 2's engine has more potensial! Come on- it's written all over the internet, with half life engine the games will never be the same. The Half Life 2 engine is not limited like Doom 3's. The only thing Doom 3 is better at, is bump mapping. And half life 2 is not far behind with that, to tell you the truth, I don't think it needs it. But that's me. Quake 4 will not be as cool as Quake 3 (Because it's not a deathmatch anymore). But who am I to judge, so I guess I'll have to wait and see. In the other hand, I think half life 2's engine will bring more surprises for us!
