HALF LIFE 2 is so much more fun.....and the doom 3 world is so booring.............. just inside places and booring monsters u dont get scared off (its a game ment to scare ppl)

Hey. First post. I have played both Doom 3 and HL2 and am a groupie of neither (atm) IMHO, Doom 3 had great visuals, but (as been said many times) lacked that special something (anything really...) that would keep anyone coming back for more. Whereas HL2 has visually stunning graphics and awesome gameplay + physics. I also think that most of the reason HL2's graphics aren't as good was that they nerf'd them. They did a test via steam a while ago (a year or two?) about peoples rigs, and how powerful they were. Most people played on a 1.4ghz processor with 256-512meg RAM (didnt say speeds) and sheety gfx cards. They made HL2 because they wanted the everyday gamer to have the same experience that someone with a multi-thousand dollar specialised gaming computer (or sumthing inbetween the two, like mine) could have the same in-depth gameplay, and stunning graphics. If they wanted to, I believe that they could have poured so much more into the graphics of HL2. Doom 3 was more out of reach of the casual gamers machine, hence less sales would of been made. But they obviously werent too worried, because as time goes on, all the "new generation" hardware such as 64-bit chips and the latest cards will be replaced by the next gen stuff (think 512meg gfx...) and therefore, the average user will be able to afford better quality stuff, and therefore play their game, and future games made on the D3 engine. Something like that anyways :rolleyes: Thats just my 3 and a half cents (gotta be different) and remember kiddies. I'm not funny! ::EDIT:: Nobody cares.

The outdoor textures look like shite. The grass texture get blurred when you're 2 meters away from it. Any engine can render outdoors, but hl2 makes it look really good.
I can't believe this is even being argued.. Doom3 was alright for graphics but I've seen all these attepts at outdoor worlds and crap and well.. they are crap. I didn't even finish playing Doom 3 because it was so repetative and the maps just sucked. Walk around the corner and heey! same monster I saw 3 seconds ago and theres 4 of them! better take out my shot gun and blast away.. Basically for now. We have Half life 2 and its amazing and fun and easy to mod. As for graphics.. the unreal engine 3 blows everything we have so far out of the water.

Half-Life 2 has better graphs: Water is better made, lighting is more reallistic and just look at the NPC´s face and you´ll agree with me... :)
You know both games are great looking. Doom 3 did have a waxy look. The funny thing is that HL2 does not require more than a 64mb graphics card, but wont use more than 256mb of memory. HL2 wont utilize a 512 if it was there. Programmers design the levels to fit within a specified memory array eg. 256mb of ram, each level will have several loading points as you see in both games. Your video memory WONT effect graphics quality, but texture loading times. When your interacting in one point of a room for instance and then turn your head and look at something graphically complex, your video card is throwing textures in and out of your system ram. I have a Radeon x800 and I played both doom 3 and hl2 cranked up to teh max, and there was little difference. Your doom 3 characters look that way because thats how the designers wanted them to look. If you have texture quality to max and model detail up all the way then your going to see the game at its best on most video cards regardless what your frame rate is. HL2 and DOOM were not made to advocaite 512 cards. Its not necessarry. A 256 would suffice. LOL The funny thing is I ran HL2 with an old 64mb Radeon card. And HL2 did not really look any different. It ran slow, but visually it was not much "better" than on my x800. A funny point on when I hear you guys say that the textures "must" be compressed is not true. You can elect in most display driver options to NOT compress your textures. You see this on the 64mb cards a lot. I dont even see the option on my x800 for this. So you know now that the model quality wont get better than the exhisting models used. Both games looked great but I throw my hat at HL2. I just wish the game play was longer. I beat it too fast and when finished I wanted (craved) more. I did not have this same expierence playing doom3. It scared me too much. ;-) Oh and don't forget the dynamics of HL2 engine. Both games engines were good BUT COMON! When you interact with the world of HL2 and throw something, or shoot a cardboard box - that was some SICK effects! Doom3's dynamics did'nt in a million years match this level of realisim. One request for HL2 was better/added FOG, RAIN, MIST, GASSES. In this dept doom 3 rocked. BTW I looked at the screen shots from the "large outdoor worlds" and they sucked. Those models are simple and unsophisticated. It reminds me of Half Life 1! LOL No lush city streets with lamp posts and grass, nope! Just rock. No buildings with various textures on the walls and things hanging up, NOPE blank walls and rock, oh yeah! There was a SINGLE tree. LOL COMON if your gunna show off "DOOM 3" I gotta see some better world textures. Theres a reason Half Life 2 takes up 4.5GB of hard drive space. LOL The acerage user wont mod there game, so you gotta look at it from a "stock" perspective. Doom 3 is pretty dark. Now like I said earlier - D3 did scare me more and had me jump a lot higher than HL2. HL2 had a lot better story which is a PLUS from HL1. Everyone tells me that HL1's s tory line was "soo good" but I played it the other day and I did'nt see crap! HL1 was repettive. Thank GOD for oposing force to explain this flawed story. Oh well...

Half Life 2 = Reflective Surfaces..., some Bump mapping, static Shadows..., Sharp Textures
Doom 3 just by easily Desrribing it has more Features, i can see the doom 3 engine Going far due to its technology,
And to u people that think doom 3 cant render outside worlds... WTF DO YOU EXPECT UR ON MARS!! your not gonna take a stroll outside.. Carmack Also said in an interview that the D3 engine can render outside environments nicely but because its Doom ur always gonna be inside dark corridors,
And for peeps that say doom 3 is waxy.... Get more then a gig of ram, get a Nice Geforce 6800 ULTRA, and Get a nice AMD 64 chip, Then the textures wotn be waxy, they will be sharp, and it will look nice... Not a Radeon, a Geforce...

HL2 im sorry to say was horribly done Graphically wise.... a couple buildings, a car or two and bam, u guys are captured by its beauty, why?? because its Half Life 2...
When your with the antlions, the Grass was all pointy, and bricky, The water was even tiled badly, it was a bunch of squares following a pattern which didnt even look like water........ only when u go into the water it actually lookd decent..
seriously.... if u think the hl2 engine is capable of more, look at its Effects and shit before saying that again.... did u see the fire in hl2??? its f**king FLAT!!! GJ VALVE U MADE FLAT FIRE!!!! NICE EFFECT!!! The detail on the models were horrid too... so simple... the only good thing on the hl2 models were the Animations and the Poly count

HL2 WINS by a million miles in the Gameplay area, due to its flexability because of the graphics... HL2 has different scenes and different things that happen, unlike doom 3 that is constant shoot monster that hide in walls.... ""hide in walls.. for no reason... ""
But, Doom 3 definitly wins Graphically, because of how much the engine can handle..
