Has anyone tried making demos from gameplay? What tools, commands, fps, quality, do you use?

I just started playing around with it, working with a crappy tool called Videomach for frame-editing, not exactly an advanced stuff. Im recording at 25-30 fps @ 640 x 480, files tend to get a bit big.

Does anyone have any suggestions for programs to edit video with? Needs to support frame-by-frame setups.

ps: I tried Fraps, the recording program, but thats not an option. It sucks.

Try a program called Camtasia Studio 2 trial. I was just about to recommend fraps, lol. What makes it suck?

Of course the video files will be big...They are uncompressed. That is why once you have all the clips, you take them into, say Windows Movie Maker for example, and upon compiling, they are compressed to reasonable sizes.

Whats an alternative option to Movie Maker? Preferably something a bit more heavy duty :p

i recommend adobe premire 7 and ulead mediastudio pro 7 ...cause i use both .. and actually they are the most common to use i guess.

waht excactly makes fraps 2.0 or higher suck? Its the most common used , by all the great movie makers (i use it since 1.8) and it doesnt suck at all ! Its freakin easy to work with and u dont have to convert the shitty bmps ! (always makes me laugh when i hear this "how do i convert bmp to avi) BIG LAUGH

It seems nomatter what I do Fraps steals more frames for recording while I play than what say a demo recording would. I loose about 30-40 fps regardless off settings, which lags the game up pretty bad.

Im gonna try both your suggestions, thanks for replying :)

dont tell me you record while playing!? THATS FULLSCREEN AVI CAPTURING O_O!! Of course you have to record a demo first , and then run the demo and record of the demo . If not then you forget that the highest fps you can record at all (for a avi ect..) is 30 (thats ntsc) or for europe 25 (pal) ! You cannot record with any higher fps ;) and dont blame fraps for an hardware issue.

edit : If the game you want to record , doesnt have "demo recording".....well then you are screwd :) , and fraps is indeed not a good idea If its HL2 then i strongly recommend fraps fo shizzle!!

Well yeah, I used to capture some ingame action with fraps, never tested playing back a demo and using fraps to record. I'll give it a go. Didnt realize there are limitations for fps in recording :p

Im recording BVF, CSS and HL2.

Never edited any video before..
