Over christmas i got myself a hefty upgrade for my PC. Baring in mind that I kept the same old Pentium 2.2 processor. 128Mb Graphics Card NVidia 6 1024Mb DDR RAM SoundBlaster Audigy 3 sound card. HL2 runs like a dream on the max. I reckon it looks as good if not better than the latest bink videos. I'm not saying ATI is crap and not to get one, I'm simply saying its not imperitive that you have one. :)
Well duhhhhh. You really think nvidia would make a card that cant cope with a relativly old graphics engine.
added: No one mention the FX series

Calling the Source engine old already are we?
god i am old. here i am, blasting things away with an ancient GeForceFX 5800, listening to sound from a SoundBlaster Audigy XGamer, running things on 2 Athlon MP 2800+ cpu's, storing crap on my 3 IBM Ultrastar 34GB harddrives.... only got a 17" monitor!
never saw the point in all the hype about ati's. they used to have quite a few interesting compatibility problems.
i miss my Commodore64.

I intended to release the Q3 source under the GPL by the end of 2004, but we had another large technology licensing deal go through, and it would be poor form to make the source public a few months after a company paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for full rights to it. True, being public under the GPL isn’t the same as having a royalty free license without the need to disclose the source, but I’m pretty sure there would be some hard feelings. Previous source code releases were held up until the last commercial license of the technology shipped, but with the evolving nature of game engines today, it is a lot less clear. There are still bits of early Quake code in Half Life 2, and the remaining licensees of Q3 technology intend to continue their internal developments along similar lines, so there probably won’t be nearly as sharp a cutoff as before. I am still committed to making as much source public as I can, and I won’t wait until the titles from the latest deal have actually shipped, but it is still going to be a little while before I feel comfortable doing the release.
Well well well, another faithful convertor to our side!
Welcome aboard!
Ive had 2 Nvidia cards in my life, and i will never go back, They dont give a rats ass about Drivers for old cards.
Ati on the other hand, A freind has a radeon 9000 and plays Halflife 2 decently on it.
My geforce 4 Wouldnt even run doom 3.
My 9800 pro Does, and quite nicely.
I heart ATI.
I am big ATi fan. They really came back with last generations R300 (Radeon 9700 Pro). They really mopped the floor with Nvidia. Honestly there was no reason to buy an Nvidia card last generation. There flagship technology demo, Dawn, ran better on ATi cards than on Nvidia's own chipset, and that's with the over head of having to use a wrapper.
This generation isn't quite so clear. Nvidia seems to have gotten their act together, and arn't making any underpowered video cards that sound like dust busters *ahem* fx 5800 *ahem*. Both companies flagship cards the 6800 ultra and x800 xt are neck and neck edgeing each other out only slightly on select games. But the truth is Ati is stil the better card for Half-Life 2. Doom 3 although is better on nvidia.
I personally prefer Ati mainly because that is all I have ever bought. I am generally pretty tough on my cards and I have never had one break on my. I have been buying Ati all the back till the Rage pro 8 meg cards. You older guys remember when they were still called 3D Accellerators? Or do you remember Voodoo and Glide? The only reason I ever wanted a Voodoo cards was to play UltraHLE, wow I am getting all misty eyed now.
I have an FX5600 and it sucks with HL2, I don't even get DX9 (while I did get DX9 with the leaked beta!!!). So I guess Ati and Valve are evil and stuff and now I'll have to buy an Ait to replace this... thing.

Ah. Here it is. (Lost my thread, ahem)
I wasn't ranting or raving. I was staing a point. Mind you it seems to have degraded into a rant on other peoples parts.
