All the Lost Coast level is, is a tech demo for the new HDR effects of the Source Engine.

The Lost Coast demo is a level designed to show the full capabilities of the Source engine at present, as well as showcasing their new HDR effects. As many people are aware, Half-Life 2 was extremely system-friendly. High-end computers were taxed so little by the graphics engine that you may as well have been playing HL1, and yet the graphics were a glory to behold. The idea behind Lost Coast is to show us what Source would be capable of if Valve didn't have to accommodate low-end systems (therefore, it wouldn't be fair or profitable to make this a chapter in the Half-Life saga, as people with low-end systems will struggle). The level of detail and complexity that will be included in this level (from looking at screenshots, anyway) will completely justify the time they have spent on it. Just look at the screenshot of the 'fisherman' -- twice as detailed as characters in HL2, and they didn't use a human reference. I have always said that the type of computing technology we use at the moment will never be capable of photo-realistic graphics, but Valve are getting pretty close if you ask me. Aftermath is the expansion you should be looking out for. Which will, incidentally, incorporate the new HDR effects, which is a good reason for them to perfect the technology and show us what they're capable of in Lost Coast if you ask me.

Lost Coast is a work of art. If there were ever any doubts that Source was the superior graphics engine when compared to the likes of Doom 3, then this sweeps them all away. And even though it was on maximum settings and the highest resolution this LCD monitor can support, it ran perfectly smoothly on my AGP NVidia Geforce 6800, 2GB RAM and FX-55 processor-- not even a shudder, even when looking out over the entire map! If this is the future, I'm looking forward to it...

Jakkc 4. How big is the file?

It required roughly 330MB of disk space, the download is just over 90MB.
