As you are reading this I am probablly finishing up the last level of half life 2 episode one so I'm sorry if they answer this by the end of it. I never played half life but from what I have heard the vortigaunts are your enemy's, some kind of slave or something??? Now, in half life 2, they are our allies and at the start of Episode One they seemed to save you and alyx. I also overheard some other humans talking about how they don't trust the vortigaunts. Personally I think the vortigaunts might turn into enemy's... Any thoughts about who they are or what you think thier purpose will be in furthur games??

In HL1 they're slaves to xen. When you kill the xen leader/boss at the end it frees the vortigaunts and now that the combine have invaded earth, they're helping you.

They were'nt exactly slaves to Xen. I was certain that Nihilanth was a representative of Combine overwatch put on their race, untill someone has shown me an interview where Valve representative stated that this creature represented other fraction and was hostile towards the Combine. The little we know is that Vortigaunts were enslaved by the Nihilanth who's race was almost entirely destroyed by the Universal Union/Combine. Although Vortigaunts and Nihilanth/Controllers hold some simmilarities in their physical appearance it's not clear if they represent same race, since why should they enslave them? It is possible that Vortigaunts come from Xen as they somehow those strong mentally, knowledgable and very devoted entities somehow fit into this strange border world. In the time of Half-Life 2 they help humanity because tehy have their own will back and as they say "Their lives are worthless, unless spent on freedom." suggesting that Combine won't allow them just to get along. They praise Freeman for releasing them from previous slavery and are decided to continue fighting on. Also seemingly, they do know somethign about the G-Man that we're yet to be told, and for some reasons intervene when G-Man was willing to take us out of all the events again. Also, reading all the stuff they say in Half-Life 2 might help alot in understanding them:

************************************************ *******************Main Speech****************** ************************************************ -We remember the Freeman. We are coterminous. -There is no distance beteween us. No false veil of time or space may intervene. -We see you still in Black Mesa. Clearly we see you in Nihilanth's chamber. -We bear witeness to the bright eternity of the Nihilanth's demise. You leap, you fall, we see you flash beyond the barriers. -For a brief time you joined us. You are one. Beteween the worlds. -Communion of vortessence. And that other: a deeper mistery. No deeper than the void itself. -We cannot forget those whose cords you cut. Forgiveness is not ours to bestow. -Unity of purpose, the shattering of common shackles, a single road we tread. -Your song we sing and shall sing for eternity. No matter the consequences of this struggle. -You have brought us grief and jubilation beyond the measure. -We are there still, in observance of your final stroke. -While our own lay scattered at your feet, you served the vortal cord that bound the Nihilanth to life, and to us. -That sharp spur of hope has not dulled to this day. For once the lesser master lay defeated, we knew the greater must also fall in time. -With you beside us, a talisman of victory, the day of freedom draws nigh. -Your bright face obscures your darker mask. -We call you sib, although your mind and meaning are a mistery to us. -Far distant eyes look out through yours. -Something secret steers us both. We shall not name it. -We have endured these chafing bonds for eons, yet a single moment of further servitude seems intolerable! -How often have we slipped our yoke, only to find it choking us again. -Let this war end in either total victory or our extinction. No further compromise shall we allow. -We take our stand beside you, here, upon this miserable rock. -The way ahead is dark for the moment. -What seems to you a sacrifice is merely, to us, an oscillation. We do not fear the interval of darkness. -We are a tapestry woven of vortessence. It is the same for you if you would only see it. -How many are there in you? Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass? -Could you but see the eyes inside your own, the minds in your mind, you would see how much we share. -We are you, Freeman. And you are us.

************************************************ *****************Looping Speech***************** ************************************************ -This is more than anyone can bear, but we will persevere. -We have lost all dear to us. -We have survived worse across the ages. -We shall prevail. -Our life is wortheless unless spent on freedom. -Our cause seems hopeless. -Where to now? And to what end? -Our finest poet describes it thus: Gallum galla gilla ma.

The vortigaunts were enslaved. You killed the Nihilanth, and now they are free. They probably understand you killing the other vortigaunts because there was no way to know they were slaves when you first meet them. So they have a debt to you and help the other humans find freedom too.

They also point that they "...cannot forget those whose cords you cut.", but as you said, they can probably understand. Those are some other types of Universal Union/Combine synths just like Striders, Hunters, Gunships or Dropships or even, as a matter of fact overwatch soldiers and elites. Synths are all the technically enchanced life forms that Combine uses in their empire developement. Maybe we will get to fight with those types in future hl games, maybe not. They are visible in the Citadel during the second human pod travel, probably didn't make it into the final game so Valve has thrown them in as a nice element.

Well the Vorts were enimeis in the orignal games Half life 1, Bule shift and Oppsoing Force. In the oringal games they would attact you with this powerful electric charge in HL 2 or Epsiode 1 they never used it.

Infact they did, but not against you. In chapter 5: Black Mesa East, first you see Vortigaunts charge up the generators while riding down in the lift. Then, after the Overwatch attack as you are following Alyx, a pile of rubble obstructs your way, if oyu'll wait for a moment after Alyx leaves, you can see a Vortigaunt killing some CPs with his charge in the background.

Yeah, and that's certainly something to look foreward to, as Valve has prepared nice set of special proceduraly triggered animations for them.
