what cable are you using to link it?

Yeah, you might have the wrong type of cable, you need an RJ-45 Crossover Ethernet cable to make it work.

the one that came in my box ;) doesnt anyone love us? we just connected the xboxs together with the cable but it said something like "sorry, not system link cable detected"

THere you have it. Go buy a,GOOd, Ethernet Cable or one that says, Xbox System Link Cable.

Or, if you want to connect more than one Xbox together, you are gonna need an Ethernet Hub, Halo 2 can support up to 16 Xbox's, one for each player (and yes, I am talking about System Link).
