You are putting the right texture in the right place, right?For example, when you import Captain Keyes, and you save the texture (via print screen and paint). Open Material editor in Gmax and go the already existing "body" Material ID and open the texture there. If it still does not fit right, try making the texture 512 x 512 (or if smaller 128 x 128)
