Hi all, I'm getting this error when I try to load a perfectly valid .jpg file to use as a heightmap:

max_IO_Error.jpg (Note: It IS Gmax even though the title says 3ds Max)

Also, Gmax seems very unstable and I have always had crashing issues when even working with a SMALL size map.

Convert it to a .bmp in paint. It accepts bitmaps. That should fix the problem

Well that solved one problem; actually I was able to use JPG if I selected it from the dropdown list instead of manually typing the extension.

Now my other problem is that now that I have the displacement modifier on the plane(the bottom of the box) I'm not seeing anything in the viewport for some reason.

So you have displaced, selected a bitmap to displaced and displaced by 1000? And nothing is happening in the main output screen? or in the side box where you should get the options. Sounds silly, but make sure you select the face you are displacing.

Ah, found the problem; forgot to change the width and length segments to 50.

Gotta have something to displace =p
