What did you use to unpack the .gcf's Fragger?
first off, id like to say that I love your work Fragger. I have been following it since you joined up with the SoF2 community on sof2files.com. Your skins are truly top notch.
This tutorial you have made is really great and I have unpacked all of the textures I need. However, when I go to make them vtf files again, vtex goes retarded on me.
My question is, how do you make vtf files again using vtex? or, what program did you use if not vtex?
Thanks a lot man. I look forward to your new skins.
I use a batch fiile, but you can use a program found HERE
well..... NICE TUT! i cant find the EAISER way so i gusse im stuck here lol. it works so im happy camper!
Maybe this could be a sticky?
This tutorial is for anyone who knows absolutely and completely nothing about skinning, a lot of people will reply to this saying how stupid i am and that there is a much better way of doing it. i know there is but last night i knew nothing, i looked through all of the forums which were great but there were too many opinions conflicting with each other so this is all the information i understood being a complete noob that got me skinning the programs you need to start skinning are WINRAR (google it) GCFSCAPE found at http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Nemesis/index.php?c=76&o=180 VTEX PACK http://homepage.ntlworld.com/craigweb2k/Spray_Tut/files/vtex.rar photoshop or some other paint program and for all you people who love to search forums and moan about piracy my photoshop is legally licenced so GURRR.. dont worry if you dont know what these do yet, it will become clear install gcfscape, now open C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps, you will notice that the icons that used to be unknown have now turned blue, WOOHOO YOUR ON THE RIGHT TRACK. before you move on you must disconnect steam, go down to the icons on the bottom right of your page, right click, close it create a new folder called (whatever you want) on your desktop (i called it "work" as fragger suggested in another thread) now open gcfcscape, go up to file, open, now follow the file path C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps and open the folder COUNTER-STRIKE SOURCE SHARED double click the folder CSTRIKE and a long list of folders will appear right click MATERIALS press EXTRACT and click the folder you created earlier on your desktop from the extract to menu press OK your computer will now go crazy downloading about 500 jagillabytes of textures to your desktop with that all done you can start working on vtex. vtex simply transforms your texture files into a format a standard paint program can read Download the zipped program to your desktop, right click the file and select EXTRACT_HERE cut the extracted folder and paste it to the folder you create earlier (where you put the textures) this gets tricky now and this is the part where all of the experienced would like to hang me up this might sound mad but i have reasons for doing it like this copy the contents of the vtex folder and paste them into C:\Documents and Settings\your name (i duck to avoid ashtrays thrown at my head) i know this looks messy having all of the dll's and executables sprawled out in your folder but there are reasons go through your folder C:\Documents and Settings\your name\your folder\materials\models\player there are two folders URBAN and TERROR copy the contents of them and paste them to C:\Documents and Settings\your name (some people are getting really angry now) so now you have the contents of vtex and your model vtf files in C:\Documents and Settings\your name yeah were almost done but here is the trickiest part go to the windows start button and press RUN type in cmd and press ok a black window will appear type C:\Documents and Settings\your name>vtf2tga.exe, name of vtf file you wanna convert, the name you wanna call the converted file for example if you wanna edit a counter-terrorist type C:\Documents and Settings\your name>vtf2tga.exe urbantemp.vtf goodguy.tga or for a terrorist C:\Documents and Settings\your name>vtf2tga.exe terrortemp.vtf badguy.tga be very carefull when typing tHe commands in, i kept getting mixed up with the extensions and had to type it in about 5 times, it's just annoying if all went well you will get text displaying the width and height of the new pic. exit out of the dos screen and go to C:\Documents and Settings\your name you will see that a new file appeared, cool isn't it, nearly done open up your paint program and open your new tga file select the pen tool and just scribble all over it, make a mess, you just wanna see if it actually works save your scribbley mess as mess.tga to C:\Documents and Settings\your name close the paint program and go to the above file, cut your mess.tga file and paste it into C:\Documents and Settings\your name\your folder\vtex\hl2\materialsrc\sprays now run tga2vtf (batch file) found in C:\Documents and Settings\simon clynes\work\vtex wait a couple of seconds now go into C:\Documents and Settings\simon clynes\work\vtex\hl2\materials/sprays and you will see yuor scribble file has converted back to a vtf file in five minutes you will see your skin in the game rename your scribble file to urbantemp.vtf if counter-terrorist or terrortemp.vtf if it is a terrorist copy it and go to C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\your name\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials\models go into the appropriate file depending on the team u edited, delete whatever is in that file and replace it with your ???temp.vtf file WOOHOO, now start up the game and one of the teams will be all scribbled over, it actually looks pretty cool. !!!WARNING!!! if you start up the game and one of the teams are invisible make sure you have the right file in the right folder, when the files are converted back over to vtf two files will appear in the sprays folder, make sure you take the vtf. if you forget the extension like i did look at the size of them, the vtf is the larger file i hope i made this very clear, if this has helped anyone to start creating skins can you send me an email of one of you first ones my email is firstname.lastname@example.org also i would like to thank the people posting in the skinning forums for teaching me and please please please nobody write in and tell me my method is bad or impractical i know it is, but it is the easiest way
Nice tutorial there! Sticky! :D
Nice. This also applies to HL2 skinning. Just use the right paths and that's it.
