How to create a custom menu background for HL2
In this tutorial you’ll learn how to replace the animated menu backgrounds with static images, for faster loading.
What you need:
You need to know how to convert vtf to tga and back. Photoshop
In your half-life 2/hl2/materials folder, create a new folder and name it “Console”. Make a new file 1024 x 768 and edit it to your liking. Add pictures, a screenshot, etc. Go nuts. Resize it to 1024 x 1024. I know it looks weird, but it’ll be OK in the game. Trust me. Create a white alpha channel. Flatten it if it has layers and save it as a tga 32 bits per pixel. Conver it to vtf. Rename it to:
Create 6 more and name them sequentially, so you end up with 7 files as follows:
background01.vtf background02.vtf background03.vtf background04.vtf background05.vtf background06.vtf background07.vtf
Place all your vtfs in the console folder.
Add the following line to your shortcut:
Your shortcut should point to:
"C:\...\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 +map_background none
Please notice that there’s a space between 220 and +map. That’s it. Fire up the game and enjoy your new backgrounds.
How do you create an alpha channel in Photoshop Elements? Is it possible? I have looked it up before but I had no luck.
It is not possible. I think Photoshop has a trial version.
