Hello everybody I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I am working on doing a mod project which is porting an old game to source. Instead of going and taking/ finding photos, I had a thought. What I am thinking of doing is taking screenshots of the textures in the old game, and then enhancing them (read: drawing over them). I'm not exacty sure how the best way it so make realistic surfaces in photoshop, especially things like rust, mildew, etc. My question is- is this a good idea, or should I just go get some images and sacrifice some of the accuracy toward the subject matter?
Get the actual textures and create your version of them. Before you start doing anything, make sure you won't get "foxed".
