I have a P4 Northwood 3GB CPU, X800XT and 1 GB RAM. HL2 has never played completely smooth on this system, but I never had constant crashing problems until recently.

I have been playing a lot of the custom SP maps lately and install them as per instructions. Most of them crash to desktop quite a bit with the typical 'The Instruction at 0x####### referenced memory at 0x#######. The memory could not be 'read' error shown on Valve's support site.

The only thing their diagnostic mentioned might be a problem was the drivers I was using, which are Omegas Cat 6.7 equivalent. I tried installing the current Cat 6.9's instead after thoroughly removing the Omegas (including from the registry). The problem got worse, so I put the Omega back in.

I haven't yet uninstalled all the ATI features they recommend or the windowed mode troubleshooting step on this crash guide... http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=278&p_created=1100821608&p_sid=7RoEtk8i&p_lva=&%20p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0yODAmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1 ...I was hoping for some input first. I don't use most of the ATI features mentioned except Cat AI.

I get the feeling most of the problem is the latest Cat drivers being optimized primarily for the X1000 series rather than X800. The latest drivers seem more finicky to install too and sometimes the desktop res won't stay set or the drivers will show as installed, then uninstalled.

I decided to try playing the stock game and see if the crashing persisted. I got up through about a third way into the airboat ride of Water Hazard and it crashed. That's not nearly as much as it was crashing in the custom maps, but disapointing just the same. I had installed and played the ravenholm mod a while ago, which is several levels long. I don't recall it crashing though, just a bit of lag when cetain levels loaded, then it went away.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong, I'm not having this problem with other games?

Try using a bunch of differnt drivers and see what happends... Is it only Half-life 2 or there are other steam games that are crashing?

Ha. I have this problem, sorry, had it. Anything above the Catalyst 6.6 drivers doesn't seem to like Half-Life 2. Although I haven't tried the 6.9s yet...

My suggestion would be to roll back to 6.6, then try it again. Let me know if this doesn't work.

Half-Life 2 has serious problems lately. They more deal with the money they ge t and in the development in the game instead helping people having problems. But I do have to agree with above post(s), rollback (install older drivers) to see if you still have the problem(s).

Have you tried anything on the support pages of the Steam website?
