hope someone here can help me. Yesterday I bought the Orange Box. Installed everything just as usual and also updated my graphiccard-driver, because Episode One told me to do so at the first startup.
Since a few Ingameminutes in Episode One (and also Portal), there are some strange bugs.
The bugs become bigger and bigger till I nearly cant see anything but the bugs. Sometimes the gun in my hands becomes invisible... so do some of the enemies.
After a few minutes of the bug the game crashes. Most times while loading the next level, but not always. When crashing, I hear the standard Windows-Error-Sound and see my cursor (moveable), but nothing else happens. The commands CTRL+ALT+DEL or ALT+F4 arent working. I also just waited, just to see if the game will start working by itself... it didnt... even not after 15-20 minutes.
Other games (the Call of Duty 4-demo, for example), work perferctly... no bugs/crashes.)
I've got Windows XP home (service pack 2) and a nVidia Geforce 8800 GTS. You need more infos about my system?
I hope someone knows the problem and how to fix it.
Thanks a lot.

Processor and RAM would be something else good to know. Though with a video card like that I'm sure you have good enough hardware. I always say to verify the integrity of your game cache through Steam. If you don't know how to, right click your game in the games list, click properties, then click on local files, and then "Verify integrity of game cache..." It finds out if you have any extra or missing files from your game and downloads what is needed. Though I doubt that is the problem, I've never seen a problem like that before.
I run an ATI card, so I may be jabbing at the wrong thing, but check your drivers. I tried to play the Bioshock demo before, but my card wasn't supported. ATI released a Bioschok hotfix that did not fix the problem (since I needed SM 3.0, not a graphical fix) and when I tried it, it also messed up my ability to play other video games. It made my screen flicker back and forth between the desktop and the blank screen for the game until it eventually said a windows error. Now, whenever I go higher than the 7.8 catalysts I think, I get the same problem. The 7.9 package was released sometime after the hotfix was relesed, so I bet they implemented the hotfix into all Catalyst releases now. Your problem could be something like that.
PS: Welcome to the gaming forums.
Also, there has been talk about DX 10 cards trying to run on Source engine games. Not only does the Source engine not support DX 10, but I think it has a few other problems with it. I'm not sure, I'm not an expert, this is just my advice. Others here are smarter when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks for your answer.
Processor: AMD Athlon 64, 4000+ RAM: 1,00 GB
I tested your "Verify integrity of game cache"-tipp, and it worked about 50%... means:
The scene where the bugs (and following crash) of the screenshots above where, went through with no problems. But a few minutes later... look for yourself:
Yes, its Barney aaand yes, those are his eyes and teeth. ;-)
So... well... good news: The problem disappeared with portal.
I dont think that the DX10-stuff is the right reason, cause I dont have Vista (so no software-DX10) and I've never had any problems with the source-engine at any time before.
Anybody else any tipps?

Odd...puzzling. I'm going to contact someone around the forums since no one seems to be replying.
You German? Or nearby in the European continent?
Thanks a lot!
How did you know? Because of the HUD on the screenshots or my horrible gramatics? :-)

This looks like over-heating issues. Check the temps of your video card next time its playing EP1 and post them up here.
Yeah the first thing to came to mind was most likey your video card is overheating or it could be a nvidia driver issue did you try swaping drivers? and please tell us more about what driver you are currently using. About the overheating isuue can you tell how hot your GPU core while playing EP2 you can find that infomation out in the nvidia driver profile. So give that a shot and tell us what the tempeture is.
