I'm at the point in the game where the large ant lion monster thing (that you need a part of to help the vorticon heal alex) has been chasing me through the level, and got to the bit where I use the crowbar to break thru a wooded up bit into a small room that looks like it would have once been use as a lift. Then whilst the it's trying to break through after you, you smash the wooden floor to fall through into an area below, and run down a corridor, and at that point EVERY single time it crashes before I reach the gate - as in it stutters for a couple seconds then I get Vista saying "hl2.exe" has caused an error.

I am running an e6600, on asus p5b deluxe wifi, 8800gtx and 3 gigs of ram, on vista ultimate. I've tried a couple of graphics driver versions and am currently on 169.09.

Anyone else having crashing problems with this game?

I have the exact same problem in the exact same spot. The error message I get is: The instruction at "0x10248f3f" referenced memory at "0x0e18f3c0" can not be read. Anyone have any ideas?

You use 32 bit of vista ? I know there's a limit with 32 bit windows not being able to page more then 2 gig ram at a time. HL2 might be using more then 2 gig ram at that particular point and results into crashing your game. ( doubt it will use 2 gig but its worth the try )

Try lowering your graphical settings for that part of the single player and see if that helps.

Probably that or perhaps corrupted ram, you have any problems with any other games ?

I'm still running Windows XP. Tried turning everything down to the lowest possible setting and it still crashed. Been looking forward to this game for so long it figures something like this would happen. :(

Any other games you play that are more hardware consuming then ep2 ? Maybe you have corrupted memory.

I'm able to play Prey, F.E.A.R., Hellgate London and every other game I own including HL2 and Episode 1.

this is the only game that crashes, and the 32 bit limit is for addressing more than 4 gigs, but that also includes anything else that uses address space, like graphics memory, io ports etc, so it tends to be around the 3 gig mark for most people. Also I've run stress tests (memtest86, i'm not overclocked, and orthos runs great too, so does 3dmark), also lost planet, time shift, c&c3, company of heroes, and bioshock and crysis all run great. Also this is an issue with the game as I've found the same thread on the steam forums here: Game keeps on crash on this vortial coil - Steam Users Forums

I have had the exact same problem. The error message I get is the same as apocowarg. I have tried reinstalling the game, disabling various other programs, as well as increasing my page file size.

I'm using a p6600 on a p5n with 2 gigs of RAM and a 8600 gt.

Since this problem is occuring at the exact same place with the same error for other people, it's obviously game related. I wonder what the issue is, and how to fix it.

I have found a solution. The problem seems to be a bad texture. To avoid crashing at this point, shoot the web at a distance with your pistol, and then face the pipe to the right. Strafe walk facing the pipe (away from the deadman) until past the webbing.

Others have had a similar problem later in the game and had to circumvent the issue by looking at the sky past the point or whatnot. This seems to have appeared after the latest patch, and perhaps will be fixed in the next one.

Hope that helps. ForumPlanet - Topic - Episode Two crashes in the mines next to maggots
