Greetings, System Specs: Pentium IV Prescott 3.2ghz 2gig DDR2 RAM 400gig 7200RPM hard drive SATA 256mg Radeon X850XT Now when i play, i seem to get incredibly poor FPS doing anything in HL2 (poor meaning about 20FPS), it doesnt seem to matter what my graphic settings are or what the situation is, but the lag persists, particularly in online games (partially due to the ping, no doubt), but i would like to know if anyone else has experienced this and how to solve the problem. My last video card was a 256meg Geeforce FX5600 and with the same settings, gave me a 60FPS on average. Nothing has changed in the system save swapping cards, installing and updating drivers. I've checked my Task Manager for any stray programs that could be chewing up resources, but no luck.

sounds like a Driver issue, Go to ATI's website and update, then update your motherboard

My personall opinion... ATI are total sh*t! Buy an nVidia. I know this does not help you. But I have been though 5 ATI cards in the past and ALL of them had problems with crashing or running slow like you mention. My nVidia GeForce 6800 GS 512Mb(1.3Ghz and 550Ghz Core) works wonders for me and HL2 has never crashed! Seriously. Anyway, as the guy above says make sure your drivers are up to do.

You mean 550 Mhz core in that card I think?:p Yes, I agree that nVidia cards are alot better, but still cuh problems should be fixable, make sure that your motherboard chipset drivers are up to date. You can eventually also try updating video crad's BIOS.

Well, I had the same problem @ DoD: S. I have an nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128mb. When I play -sometimes- the game crashes :s. And I don't have a single clue why.

Drivers are not the problem, no change when updated to the latest version (only 2 months behind the times). The card is functioning properly, no crashes, graphical glitches or other anomolies, the FPS is just shockingly poor.

EDIT: I just did the CS:S Video Stress Test and got an average FPS of 96.5 when everything was running at maximum quality. I opened up garry's mod and did some messing around, the system seems to only lag when a moderate to large numbers of character models or NPCs appear, which suggests to me that it may be a bottleneck somewhere in my system, such as the CPU and the RAM, perhaps my CPU is overheating and being throttled by my Gigabyte motherboard.

The only other thingi can think of is, for some reason, the game may only be utilizing 50% of the CPU (Hyperthreaded with 2 threads).

The game can't be using only 50% of oyur CPU power, same the Gigabyte mother board have an impact on perforamcne unless it's some old model, but it's no way case of the creator. Also what spawned charachters in Gmod cause your performance to drop is their AI requiring CPU time to count it all, not the card unless it's sme realy old one. I myself also have very weird problem of player in Counter-Strike: Source somehow constantly sliding on the surfaces since I switched to 7900GT, but I don't bother realy as I don't play it. Still I think that only reinstalling whole game might help.

Pretty much all of them except Barney, Alex and Antlions, but even in numbers it just slows down. I can handle three or four zombies in the mix as well. Essentially, anymore then 10 NPCs at any one time starts to slow down the connection, when i messed around, i wasnt particular about what i spawned.

In Garry's mod it can't slow down connection if you're playing offline. More likely it's your CPU having problems with handling all the calculations.
