Hey, got a launch problem I don't think is covered here yet... I've got HL2 authenticated, activated, registrated... errr... registered..., patched, etc. When I go to the Play Games tab of Steam and click on "Launch Game" for HL2, it pops up the box that says "Preparing to Play Half-Life 2", but then it sits there for a few seconds and then just disappears with no error messages or any other indication that something went wrong. I don't know if this is a problem with Steam servers or if it's a computer problem I have... the only thing I could find that was out of line was under the properties of HL2, it says "Status: Requires Update" even though I've updated it as far as it's allowed me too... any suggestions? Same thing happens for CS:S, by the way, though I suppose that can be expected...
I too am having problems getting HL2 started., but my problem is different. I have HL2 installed and everything is set, but when I have a problem when HL2 loads. When I try and load it up, it'll show the guy and the faucet sticking out of his face, then it will immediately go back to the desktop without saying any errors or anything. Any help will be much appreciated, arr!
I have the exact same problem that Munkee has. Please, let me know if you find out what the problem is or a workaround...
hey Have the same problem, ived made a image disk of the dvd, because i will not load the dvd everytime i vill play it, maybe u have done the same:confused: ..... Oak Pleace help
I am sorry i can not help you. But this is what happens to me and it DOES work.
it says "preparing to launch hl2" for what...10-20 second? then it dissapears and 10 or 5 seconds later it loads the game but after the valve gusy (with the valve stuck on his eye) the screen gooes black. I press the windows logo key on the keyborad (equivelent of pressing start) and then click again on the hallf life2 task on the taskbar and then press on the screen again. Im not sure if it does ahything but that is how i do it. Then i have a really really long load time on the main menu (think 3 minutes)
There's never an HL2 task on the taskbar at all... no Valve logo appearing, nothing. I've watched Win2k task manager when I start it and I've yet to see a HL2 task start up there... I really don't quite follow what's going on here. It'd be a little better if I knew if it was me or them though... this is whole situation is kinda gimpy. :uhm:
I got the same problem too, tried all the solutions to all the problems people have had so far but they haven't solved mine (or our's) at all. If any one gets a clue, please, please, please post it here as I may die if I don't play this game soon.
ok first of all do you guys have retail or steam? I have retail and i have cd 1 inside.
It seems not to many people here know answer, i would call Vivendi Uiversal or help. sorry, i know what it feels like, my cd key asnt working and i couldnt play while everyone else was like "w00t!!! hl2 is awesome!!!!" and i was like "thats greate, howabout you help ME!?" I'm sorry, i understand but i honestly cant help you.
As i said, call VU. maybe try upgrading your drivers? Although since a lot of people have this issue, its probably not that.
P.S if you call them and you get a simple answer that works (or as long as you remember how it was fixed) post it here for other people to find out.
If I find an answer, I'll spread the love, don't worry about that... I have retail also, w/ CD1 in the drive and such. I reinstalled it today and rebooted after every single tedious step (Activating Files, Updating, etc.), and I got it to say that my offline version is available. Well, tried the offline version, and the same thing happens, so I'm guessing it's my computer instead of Steam. I got the latest NVidia drivers for my GeF4 (which I'm pretty sure will get the job done in HL2) yesterday before I installed, so I don't think that's the problems... I've seen people talking about uninstalling CD burning programs and something about drive access which lets you drag and drop files into your CD Burner's drive letter prior to burning, which seemed to work for some people. I guess I'm going to try to look into that, though I don't think I have a program which allows that. Hopefully Nero isn't the problem for all this.
Specs (for the record): Intel P4 2.0 GHz NVidia GeForce 4 Ti4600 512 MB Ram (2700) SB Live Sound Card
I just found this thread on the Steam forums: http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=177045 It's kinda scary if that really is the problem... I've got 2 CD drives which could read the CD, but a freak accident took out one of them about 3 days ago, so I'm trying to fix it up to see if it's simply a CD Drive Incompatibility problem.
I dunno if this is the total problem but i uninstalled nero INcd and things started working fine. I dumped the disk as well but it was working for me before I did that.
I will admit though between being forced in to using Steam and this launch jazz i am starting to feel they should have put off this game another 6 months.
