I used to be able to play hl2 with no problem on the highest settings. It's been about a year since I played the game on this system, but now it seems to stutter constantly and is constantly jerky even in areas of the game where nothing much is going on. I've defragged, stopped all unneeded services, uninstalled unused programs, and I've even gone as far as to fomat my hard drive and re-install windows. Nothing so far has fixed the problem. Any ideas would be extremely helpful. MSI P4N Diamond SLI Motherboard Pentium 4 EE 3.73Ghz Dual Core 2 x Nvidia 7800gt 2gb ram 10000 rpm hard drive
try the dual core optomiser from amd or the c2d optomiser from intel/microsoft. they will fix the timing errors that occur in games not designed for dual core systems. the timing errors cause stutters and haults in game play... good luck. AMD Athlon™ 64/FX Processor Utilities & Updates
dual core? hell no, HL2 works great on a dual core system.. I have no idea why it runs crap on your PC tho :(
sorry for double post, but have you tried enabling or disabling SLI?

Yeah, I've enabled SLI, but it doesn't seem to help.

Have you updated your video card's drivers? http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
They are up to date. I was able to get a slight performance increase by setting the affinity manually to CPU 0. I would really like to have a more permanent and better fix though.
:( I really don't know what the problem is... Maybe jaymack is right and it is your CPU, I've have no experience with dual core P4.. just single core P4 or Core2 duo... Sorry I can't help, good luck fixing it anyway..
Thanks for the help anyway. I found a microsoft hotfix that seemed to help quite a bit. It actually cites Half Life 2 in the description.

If you like Halflife 2, then maybe you should try the Fortress Forever mod that was recently released. It plays on my shitty PC with no problems!
