First of all I apologise if you've already had people post about this before, I've looked around and this seems like a pretty popular error. Anyway, yesterday I bought Half-Life 2 and I got through all that painful Steam nonsense and finally ran HL2 through the Play Games menu on Steam. It showed the guy with the valve in his eye, then the legal stuff at the bottom and then it showed a blurred picture of a street. It then went black and gave me this error: ~~HALF-LIFE 2: hl2.exe - Application Error~~ The instruction at "0x0127cc80" referenced memory at "0x0127cc80". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program. What's up with that? I played the demo fine, I should be able to run this! AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.00GHz, 512mb RAM ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Could someone please help me? I'd really like to know how to work it soon... Thanks

Check that your drivers are up to date, and also go to www.steampowered.com and see if validating your files will work.
I validated HL2, took a while. I closed Steam then reopened it, and tried playing it but it does the same thing. :/ Also, what drivers do I have to update? I've updated my video card driver but that's it. Oh, and if it helps, Counter-Strike Source or Half-Life Deatmatch give the same error on start. I'll try validating them.

Hmmmm, I Had The Exact Same Problem A Couple of weeks ago, my only advice would be this, either reinstall everything or repair it, and try searching the error message on a search engine, see if it gets anything, i remember that it worked with one game i had, and it told me ther was a new add-on out and the game dusnt work without downloading it
I tried reinstalling it yesterday but it gave me the same problem. I've also tried searching the error message, but I'm always led to solutions that either I don't understand or just won't work. It's really confusing, I just want to play the game! :( I tried a virus scan and Ad-Aware today and yesterday but it doesn't work. I was thinking of updating my motherboard drivers, but the thing is, I don't know what type of motherboard I have. And installing drivers for a different type would do some damage I think.
I have the Q crosshair problem, I tried reinstalling but that didnt work, oh btw, reinstall it if you hav'nt already
Ok. i think i have found the solution to this problem. it works to me but i dont know if it will work for you(i hope it does). ok first open up my computer. open your half-life 2 folder C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOURACCOUNT\half-life 2 then open up your "bin" folder. next, copy ALL the files in there and paste it in your half-life 2 folder C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOURACCOUNT\half-life 2 hope this helps... -mentle_monkey
