My nVIDIA card may not be powerfull (GeForce FX 5600 Ultra), but it does support DX9!!!! hl2 automatically switches to using DX8 on my comp because of the old card to improve performance and now the shadows are crappy looking, there is no bump-mapping on characters and monsters, and the water is very simple looking!!!!! does anyone know how i can switch to using direct x 9??? maybe a command line or change a cfg file?

thnx Syko!

-dxlevel 90 command works!!!

u can tell that the shadows are "supersampled" and whatnot but they dont look as good as in some ppl's screenshots

i guess its because i have nVIDIA

both nvidia and ati cards of reasonably current generation (including my fx5800 ultra) support full shaders as implemented in the directx9.0c api. you might have them disabled past 8.1 (as i had, due to a video card bios glitch that reports hardware api support only up to directx8.1). even forcing software rendering of 9.0c's additional shader effects will give you complete functionality, though you may lose some speed. i used to prefer nvidia, because ati had pooey drivers. (especially for nt4 and 2000) now, i don't think i can choose which i like better. they've all got their strong and weak points. i just chose nvidia this last time because it was cheap when it came out (kind of...) and i can modify it without 100% certainty of killing it - my inexperience with the ati, of course, would be the culprit if i broke it.
