I've swapped my RAM around, taken 512 from another pc (which now has a broken motherboard cause of it) and i still can't get the bitch to work. Anyone any more ideas? I've been on http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=278&p_created=1100821608&p_sid=GxzXBJrh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9MiZwX2NhdF9sdmwxPSZwX2NhdF9sdmwyPSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PVRoZSBtZW1vcnkgY291bGQgbm90IGJlICdyZWFkJw**&p_li= from Valve, but frankly i can't be arsed to try all that with only one working had... Anyone any more ideas?

Maddonn, thank you! I was going fuckin crazy with this game. I tried that command along with +map_background none to help loading and it runs smooth on low/med settings. So-so on high. What I'm running: petium p4 2.8ghz windows xp sp2 512 mb ram 160 gb hard drive not sure on system board whatever shitty graphics card is bundled on the board and it still works nice :naughty: I was having the same stupid shit pop up, memory read error, and I couldn't even get it to load to the main menu. I tried that command after so much or bullshit and BAM! Works better then a virgin slaming blue diamonds on prom night. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I was about to smash the screen and send this pezzo di merda back to the store. Don't even get me started on steam...I've never seen so much shit with the downloading and the registering and the acount creating...all for a damn game you just BOUGHT from a store.

Yeah so rockywear guy, try that. and thanks again awalrus.

for people with sound issues (locking up, then sound continues) it might help to try disabling hardware acceleration for sound (either in device properties or under directx tab).

even if you don't seem to have a sound problem, doing this alters the amount of memory used by the game, and might make a difference in how often, or even if, it crashes.

of course, the steam guys have a huge list of things to try, and a lot of the things are counterproductive. too bad windows likes to see memory holes.

I just signed up to share how I fixed this problem with my machine...

After about three solid days testing absolutly everything, I found my voltage regulator on my Sapphire X1800 XT graphics card was over-heating. I built a heatsink, fan and temperature control unit... SUCCESS!

Hope this helps someone out there and saves them buying a new card of worse still, submitting an RMA, lol.
