Why is the voice acting - or lack thereof - so invariably terrible? The people seem to have little or no emotion, like Jaden in the Single Player Jedi Academy, and the subtitles are full of grammatical and spelling errors (I'm fussy about that). If you want it sorted, I can do it for you - with emotion!!!! But I may need time to set up my microphone.:p

I'll give you a quick answer, that may or may not satisfy you. When people do SP mods, they're usually more concerned with the content than the voice acting. Because of this, they just choose the first couple of people they find. Or worse... they let their friends do it. It's really bad to get your voice actors from the gaming community. No sleight to all you hard-core gamers out there, but when it comes to speaking y'all suck. That's why you should stick to what you're good at: slaughtering stormtroopers. If an SP mod was going to be really good, it would be better to get a voice-actor from a voice acting community, such as StarWarsFanworks.com, which is where I look for my VAs. Do you like voice acting? hehe. You better watch out who you say that to. They might harass you to do some work for them ;) EDIT: I apparently only got halfway through your post... so I have something to add! hehe. If you've noticed, these game developers recycle their voice actors/acresses. Like Jennifer Hale (Bastila, Jaden, others). I can't say I think Jennifer Hale is the best voice actress, although she's decent. Male Jaden, as you mentioned, I was definitely not thrilled with. Of course it seems like the game quality of JA is reflected in its voice acting: mediocre. Some other games are better... but I'd say you can expect better voice acting from a game that relies more heavily upon it, like KotOR or any good RPG. However, there were some great typos in the KotOR strings. "Mandalorain" and "mercenray" were a few of my favorites ;)

I couldn't agree more. I've always hated when people speak in weird accents too...speaking in a very American accent ruins the Star Wars feel. And I've also noticed this in flash movies etc.

You're calling "American" a weird accent...? :P I've been told when I voice act I sometimes have a "Chicago" accent. However the good actors can mask their own natural accent, and even mimic others. Sometimes it just turns out that they don't cast someone very good... hehe.

The following is a reality check.

You need to put things in perspective. Comparing work by a large and talented group of professionals, with many resources at their disposal, to one single individual's work with limited resources is unfair and unrealistic. Finding voice actors for mods is very difficult. A lot of people think they're good because their mom or friends said so but the fact is they're not. If you do find someone who's decent and is willing to take the time out of their schedule to help you out, you take them. That's reality. If a modder goes the extra mile to add custom voice acting to their mods, that's a bonus. Put the quality of the acting into context.

The same goes with custom models, maps, textures and any other assets made by modders. Just be happy you're getting extra game content for free and be realistic when you’re judge it.

I agree with you completely, but I also think there's a certain point at which a modder should stop and say "Okay, that just really sucked. I should find someone new." There are levels of badness. There is "omg I want to rip my ears off," there is "wow that was pretty bad," there is "well, not so hot," there is "ahh that was okay," and of course there is "that was pretty good" and "that rocked." For me, anything above "well, not so hot" is livable with me. But I've heard some stuff where I wonder how anyone could have thought it was decent. However, as you'll note we were also talking about professional voice actors for the games. I think gaming developers have started lowering their standards. Maybe they think no one will notice?

Heh... Now I know I can request a dozen retakes from you, Inyri :P (once I finally get around sending you even the sample lines). Since I'm an SP mapper, all accusations here directly concern me. And I totally agree with the Mighty Merchant of War. Although for my own part I must say that I have been such an overly kind and gently director that I haven't demanded very much from my actors. That is totally due to the "Putting the quality of the acting into context". I'm not saying I would have tried to lower the quality of my levels by accepting substandard acting. In fact, I have been pretty happy with the acting, because it has been sufficient for the levels, considering my ambitions, and the quality of the manuscript. But that will change with my next level. I will be very strict with the voice acting. I can only hope I won't lose any friends due to that decision. But now my ambitions are higher than ever. But the fact is the manuscript will have demanding parts. What comes to commercial games, I have always enjoyed the few movies actors among other people. Like John Rhys-Davies in Freelancer. Damn, he ruled!

I just get bored when characters in games speak in monotones. They could at least change the tone of their voices once in a while. Or sound like they mean it when they add some humour. I have a strong Birmingham (That's England, not Alabama) accent so I'd probably end up sounding like soemthing out of Monty Python. A JA rendition of the Dead Parrot would dominate!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

We're forgetting the worst voice actor of them all. Rosh.

No, actually Jason Masden is a really good voice actor, the character of Rosh just sucks. The same VA did Brejik and Dustil in KotOR, so if you think they suck too then I guess you could say the VA sucks...
