This seems to be a fairly common problem. After looking over old topics, however, I'm still not able to find a definitive answer. I've downloaded two new ships (the Prometheus and the Scimitar), but am unable to make the appropriate changes to the DefaultCore or DefaultLoadOut files. After pasting the information for one or both of the downloaded ships into the DefaultCore file, I try to save the changes, but get this message: DefaultCore.txt This file exists with Read Only attributes. Please use a different file name. When I try to use a different file name, I get this message: You do not have permission to save in this directory. A lot of people have said to make changes to it as a spreadsheet. I tried having DefaultCore open as a spreadsheet, but even then I'm not allowed to make changes. I suppose I could make a new spreadsheet entirely, but how could I save it in the game? So far, everything I've tried does nothing in the way of me being able to save any changes. I'd really appreciate it if someone knows what's going on and knows how to fix it. Thanks! :type:

i don't know about other versions of windows, but on windowsXP whn you right click on a file and go under properties a small screen comes up. near the bottom near attributes there's a small box labeled read-only. it's probably checked, so uncheck it. that will allow you to save changes to the file. hope that helps.

I have WindowsXP and I've tried that too. When I uncheck the read-only box, I get this message:

An error occured while applying attributes to this file. Access is denied.

What's the deal with this? Why isn't anything working?

Install beta patch and in defaultloadout.txt find line for scimitar ( should be at the end of romulans ). There in that line you can see letters NS. These letters you should remove or change to AI and it will be playable. For prometheus you should place it ahead of sovereign ( think so ) and than make apropriate changes in line for it should work correctly. Federation Fed-Dreadnaught2 Prometheus Prometheus .... - is what should be written in DLO.txt for proper work and 45 DN .... Fed-Dreadnaught2 Prometheus ....- in DC.txt . If that does not work please send me lines for federation ships from both files ( DLO.txt and DC.txt ) with lines for Prometheus and Scimitar and i`ll put them in. My adress is Rogue77@ptt.yu

Okay, I just installed the Beta patch, but nothing is any different - I still can't save changes, and I can't make DefaultLoadOut or DefaultCore not read-only. I'll send you the lines you asked for, but how will I be able to save them?

I had the same problem when I first tried to modify then I started looking for a file I could change.

Right click the SFC3 desktop icon Click on Properties Click find target Scroll up to the "Assets" Folder and open it Scroll down to the "Specs" folder and open it Find the "default core" icon that looks like a note pad and open it or if you want to change the custom load out, find the note pad that says it. This should work for you.

And if nothing you can from notepad or wordpad or some other program (like excel ) open current file. Start program go to File choose Open and then browse for file you want to open.

And when you install beta patch you have scimitar already installed but there is no line for `im in DC.txt . There is line in DLO.txt for `im at the end of rom`s line. There you just need to remove letters NS in it`s line or change them to AI or CUSTOM.

Thanks to all who answered my question. Goxy, I got your email, and Capt. Scott, you don't know how helpful you were in showing me how to alter files. I'd kept exploring files through "My Computer." Right now, I'm trying to sort through all the hints and emails I've been given from either this forum, or from outside sources. I'll post if I run into anymore problems, but in the meantime, thanks again!

Okay, I'm finally able to make and save changes to the files within the game, but some strange things are happening when I do. The Scimitar isn't showing up as an option to play as, and the Prometheus is doing some very strange things. Right now, there's no picture of the ship in the vessel library, but the system icons are visible. When I try to play as the ship, the missions are nothing but darkness - no ship or starfield can be seen. Options?
