Difficult question. One almost dreads to present ones opinion, seeing as the smoking thread degenerated into chaos.

Furthermore, I reckon that I cannot post my opinion without presenting obvious double standards on my behalf. For the record, I am divided on the issue, one half wanting to take the moral high ground, the other half wanting to argue for freedom of choice

Also, the main question’s three available answers provide one with three moral dilemmas.

  • yes, i'm against drugs
  • no, i'm not against drugs
  • i'm only against hard drugs

A – If I was to vote A (yes, i'm against drugs), then how can I defend my fondness for alcohol? Alcohol is a socially acceptable ‘drug’, whereas other drugs, like heroin, cocaine, etcetera, are not. Should alcohol be banned? I think not, but the death toll directly (and indirectly) linked to alcohol is alarmingly high.

B – If I was to vote B ( no, i'm not against drugs ), how could I defend my opinion that hard drugs were to be banned whereas soft drugs were not? Both are addictive, both can ultimately lead to the death of the user and perhaps other people in his/her vicinity.

C – If I was to vote C ( i'm only against harddrugs ), as I am inclined to, how can I argue for this choice? Clearly heroin and cocaine are dangerous drugs, but I’ve also seen a few lives ruined by hash and weekend/party drugs (ecstasy, speed, etcetera), and some by alcohol.

But then again I have also seen lives ruined by automobiles, industrial machinery, guns, kitchen utensils, pets, electronics, ropes, pointy sticks, etcetera. It is a thin red line, and one that is not clearly visible to the naked moral eye…

Nevertheless, I’ll vote C, morals and ethics be dammed.

Regards, Giovanni

I am firmly against drugs (except for controlled medical use) and I have no respect for drug addicts.

I am also agaisnt drugs, but I also believe that everyone has a righjt to take them. If the legal drugs today become illegal ppl would find a way to get them anyway but it would be much more drastic like the Gangs in the 30s
