Ok, so i was reading the WWII thread, and it gave me an idea.... how about a thread on the Vietnam war.

Personally the vietnam war is the most interesting to me, because it has gureilla (SP?) warfare, modern (sorta) weapons, and the use of special forces.

I have also recently taken an interest in the LRRP's (Long Range Recon Patrol) which eventually became the Rangers. For those of you who dont know what the LRRP's were, I suggest reading the Six Silent Men series.

So is anyone else interested in the Vietnam War???

well, i never said it was a "good" war.... and i said sorta modern weapons... But i also completely agree that it is stupid to have to go to the white house to fire on someone who is clearly against you.

BTW i love the peguin thing in your sig :D

The rangers were formed in 1942, so the LRRPs didn't form them. My Aunt's future husband was killed from a direct mortar hit at Khe San. 58,000+ Americans died for nothing. Read the book about Daniel Ellsberg about the Pentagon Papers. It states that the US Command routinely said the war was improving and we were "winning", yet before these press releases they'd convene about how bad it was getting. The government of south vietnam was corrupt and we shouldn't have been there...the domino effect didn't really materialize.

M-16 the worst rifle ever!? I know in the Vietnam war it was really crappy, but is it really the worst? Aren't the newer versions good at all?

It was the same way in the US, they vets were spat on, shamed...even though they didn't decide to start a war halfway across the world. many still have psychological problems today, and a large part of the homeless community are former vietnam vets.

Indeed,

The irony was that some of the young men who served and died for their country were anti-war activists in compulsory military service. Due to national conscription they got to serve in the war they despised and were equally poorly treated by their former anti-war associates when they returned home (discharged and/or with various body-parts missing). :uhm:
