You don't need to use MD3, export to ASE instead.

To make the textures show up in Radiant/JA; in the 3DS Max (texture editor window) name the texture the relative path from base/ to the texture.

e.g. say you applied a texture called grass1.jpg to a part of your mesh. First off make a folder somewhere in base\ for your texture, lets say it's base\textures\mynewmap\grass1.jpg. In 3D Studio Max, choose Bitmap as the diffuse material and select your grass1.jpg and UVW map it in 3D Studio Max how you want it. Now set the name of the material that has the diffuse map you just chose and applied to textures/mynewmap/grass1 - note the slashes and lack of file extension. Finally export as ASE and be sure to check the box that says export texture co-ordinates.

The latest GTK supports ASE, 3DS, MS3D and others.
