Well, I just need a push to help get me started.

I'm not a >complete< noob, having made a few maps for Unreal 1/ Unreal Tournament not too long ago. But unlike Unreal which was packed with Ued, I'm not sure what tools I need to work with JO or JA.

I understand that its built with an enhanced Quake III engine... what are the tools necessary? I've got all I need to make custom textures (and in fact I'm getting pretty good at reskinning, if I do say so myself ;) but what do I need to build the actual geometry?

I'd much rather make maps for JA than JO since I've been concentrating on reskins for JA and would like to use my new skins in my maps; but I understand they're close enough that you can load JO maps with JA as long as you make sure to bring along the assets. So I'm willing to try JO first since I'm sure theres more information/better tools for JO out there.

Anyway, I'm just hoping some veteran mapper can take pity on me and give me a nudge in the right direction ;) In exchange I promise to write a comprehensive tutorial on reskinning under JA...once I figure out one or two little nagging details... :p

If you're new to Q3 mapping, the JA mapping tool isn't "officially" out yet but there is a beta...I would recommend that you wait a couple more days as by then the final should be out, a week at the most. Only reason I say this is because the beta is out on BitTorrent :p

It is possible to get the JO mapping tools and hack'n'slash them together to get it working with JA...but for what it's worth with the imminent release of the official GTK...it's not worth it.

The GTK will be at http://www.qeradiant.com/

Ok cool, thanx... but is there any way I could get started on the map itself with the JO tools and then import to JA? Even if I don't actualy work on any map that will be a finished product, it might help to learn the basic program ahead of time. IF you think the editors are close enough to each other when it comes to interface, etc.

They're almost identical, do you have JO? If so you can install GTK for JO and map for that, just avoid using game textures really so you can port to JA...build in system/caulk as that's in both versions and is the texture you should build in any way :p

Dload GTK for JO from that URL.

and dont forget about tutorials!!!!! richdiesal.jedioutcastmaps.com/tutorials/ a man by the name of Rich Diesel set up the most popular jk2 mapping tutorial site ever, read thm! I still reference it today and ive been mapping cs/unreal/jk2+3/ravenshield and others for over 4 years! Keep at it, if you have the paitence to skin (god knows i dont) you'll definately make a fine mapper! But read EVERY tutorial starting from the first and learn your editor like the back of your hand! Look forward to seeing your work :-P Good luck
