I'm trying to make new races in JKA SP. I've followed kaosu reido's instructions and quigon 0079's sticky step-by-step, but my new characters just won't show up in the species selection screen! Thing is, I've also downloaded J-2000's new reborn and reborn twin races, and darth maul race from someone at pcgamemods (sorry i don't remember ur name) and they worked FINE! I don't see any difference (except for 1 file) in the content of my pk3 files from theirs but mine still won't work! My Chiss race,for example, contain:

-all of the Chiss's jpg files, and its model.glm file. Unchanged.

-model_default.skin, head_a1.skin, torso_a1.skin, lower_a1.skin. I changed all the 'chiss' in the model_default.skin file(excluding the ones in the .jpg files' name themselves, of course) to 'jedi_chm'. Then I copied it into three files named head_a1.skin, torso_a1.skin, lower_a1.skin.

-I renamed the chiss's default, red and blue icons to icon_head_a1, icon_torso_a1, icon_lower_a1. (Thinking that maybe I shouldn't copy them like that, I've also tried creating them myself with photoshop,but to no avail) I deleted the model_blue and model_red skin files of the Chiss.

-I extracted the playerchoice.txt file and edited it precisely like quigon's sticky says,leaving only the white cvar parts.

-I extracted the menus.str files from the strings\ dir for all four languages and edited them.I copy paste the human female's part, adding it on top of its original location( not erasing the original human female's bit of course) and changed JEDI_HF to JEDI_CHM, "Human Female" to "Chiss Male". I did the same with the other languages.

I changed the models\players\chiss folder name( where all those files were, cept for the menus.str files) to models\players\jedi_chm

I put all of those files, along with a sounds.cfg file from jaden( I put it into my jedi_chm folder first) into a new zip file with winzip, named it sp_chiss.zip, chiss_new.zip, chiss.zip, (I tried 3 times on the chiss race alone, that's how desperate I am) and then renaming the extension to .pk3 in windows explorer. Then I put the damn pk3 file into the base folder(oh, by the way my JKA version is 1.0.0 I think). That's it. Is there anything that I did wrong or didn't do? please help me here, I'm at my wit's end!

BUT, I do notice that all three new races I downloaded all have a THUMBS.DB file in their pk3. I have no idea what this file is and I don't have this file in the pk3s that I made, nor do I know how to make or open 'em. Is this why? I'm not very new in messing around with JK's wonderful pk3 files and creating these mods, I've ben doing this since Jedi Outcast and they've all worked well pretty much up till now. I feel so close I can taste it!!! it's so frustrating...please, anyone, help me!!

BTW, the characters I'm trying to make playable are: -Chewbacca(with a li'l photoshop....Wookie Race!!) -jawa -desann(with photoshop...Reptilian Race!!!) -exar kun (from jk2files)

...if my failure's because of something in my PC or software isn't up to it, which means that I wouldn't be able to make these mods,

Could someone please,PLEASE create the mods for the characters above and post them?(here or in jk2files would be great!) I'm sure that a lot of other people would also like to play with new characters other than the (boring after you completed the game with them) default races. Maybe quigon 0079 or J-2000 or Kaosu Reido can do it? 'cause you guys clearly know what you're doing in this particular subject( again, your races mods work FINE! alongside my dud races mod,too...which makes it so much frustrating for me...sigh). You don't even have to make any custom skins with it, just the original skins for the characters, so that it wouldn't be a hassle for you and they would be smaller files to download(the internet connection in the internet cafes in my country is mind-numbingly slow, 1-2kb/s if you're lucky). Anyway, please help because JKA has so many great characters in the game to play as, not to mention the custom made models in the internet which are often much more beautiful. Anyone who would help, you'll have my eternal,undying gratitude for solving this very annoying problem. I'll probably owe you a wookie life debt,or something.

OK. The "thumbs.db" file is a windows file, so that doesn't mean anything on our works. I say our, because if you go to the sticky qugon0007's post I had a problem that caused some text trouble. It could be useful if you attach your pk3 so that I or someone else can test it...

Sorry it took me so long to answer. I have no idea that THAT's the problem! i always use winzip for the pk3 files and the directory pathways for the files always show up like they're supposed to in it, so i didn't think think there was any problem. I'll download Pakscape soon. Anyway, so are you saying that each FOLDERS of the files should be IN the pk3s? i thought that adding only the files from the folders into the pk3( so the pathways from the folders will be included) was enough...guess i'm wrong. What i've done up until now (after i finished making the necessary files like the skins, model.glm, menus.str etc for the pk3 in their respective folders) was to create a .zip file with winzip, "add" all those files into it (without the folders but with the pathways showing in the winzip screen) and then renaming it into .pk3. Is that the problem? or is it because i'm not using pakscape? well, anyway, I'm gonna download your .zip file and that pakscape and see what i've done wrong. And about the menus.str, I've always created all 4 of them for each language but i only post you the english one to save time and size( and yes, my pk3s with all 4 menus.str don't work as well), so that issue's clear. Thanks a lot! I hope this is it!

PS:for the parts selection you mentioned, can't you just open the .skin files for the respective body parts and then delete all entries whose pathway DOESN'T point to that specific body part? For example, in the torso.skin, delete all entries that point to head, lower, legs etc. so you'll have only the pathways for the torso's body parts (arms, torso,etc). That has always worked for me before, maybe that'll work?

Good. There's no difference in using pakscape or winzip. They're all the same. You could even use WinXP integrated zip extractor! It makes no difference. But both they have their drawback and advantage... You can find Pakscape here: http://www.planetquake.com/maldavria/downloads.html For the parts... Hey N3G1@, I didn't know what went wrong before with my files, but I'm sad to say that............THEY WORK FINE NOW!! Maybe it is the winzip, after all... I used the pakscape ( thx for giving the link, btw, but so sorry cause i've already downloaded it before you posted it) and they're suddenly playable! I don't know what it is, but I don't care, I can make whatever species I can from now on! Thanks a whole lot for helping me through with this man, if there's anything that I with my poor knowledge can help you in this game, you need only ask. Damn, if we ever meet in an MP game, I'd take a homing shot in your place as my wookie life debt.

Well, you're welcome... But this sounds too strange. The pk3 had no directory structure, and it's impossible that it works as it is... This is the strangest thing I've ever seen after my comp with the melted cpu that after 20 min worked again...:confused: :uhm:

No, I meant that I made a new file with the pakscape that you suggested from my old botched ones and it worked fine. I haven't tried your files at the time...in fact i haven't tried them yet :P because (now that they worked) i was having so much fun creating new species files (9 and counting!). So the files you sent don't work? Well that's ok my friend, it's the thought that counts, besides i wouldna have known about this pakscape thingy if it wasn't for you, so it's the end that counts. Thx again!!!
