I'm thinking of buying a PNY GeForce FX 5500 / 128 MB DDR / AGP 8X. Note that I don't play too many newer games. I'm definitely considering playing a bit of Half-Life 2 on it, but I still play a lot of RtCW (both SP and MP), as well as ET. Would this card be more than sufficient, assuming that I wanted to play at 800x600 with maximum detail?
Note that I'd rather not buy an absolutely amazing video card. I'd like to stay well under $100, which would be easy in this case (I can get one for a little over $70, thankfully.). I plan to eventually build a second computer from scratch, which will have more powerful components in it.
P4, 2GHZ, 1024 MB Ram and a Geforce 5700 256MB.
Wolf plays fine but for HL2 therefore I really need an update. Still good for single player going 35 to 70 fps but online you really need a 60+ minimum imo.
I reccomend the powercolor 9600pro 256mb since It runs Hl2 at full quality and all your other games extremly well. Stay way from the 6600Gt sinceit has 128mb of ram and is omly 128bit. Its $120 but will last a long time for you. There is also the 9550 series of cards in 256mb for only $85 The FX series of card is kinda crappy.
Honestly, my GeForce2 MX 400 runs HL2 reasonably well. Barring the occasional lock-up, the game is quite playable on my old-ass card. I just checked on some benchmarks for the 5500 (specifically for RtCW, even), and I think it's what I need for now.
I reccomend the powercolor 9600pro 256mb
I would never buy ATI because Linux driver support sux. So I guess that ATI's generally OpenGL support is worse than NVIDIA's. That says all about the company - supporting the majority only - they dont care well about customers.
Yere i have a few pc,s 3 . 1 for my kids .. i have an 128mgb 9600 ge game buster in my P4 2.8 gig runs doom 111 np ...also a Nvidia mx 64 mgb , that runs doom 111 , with no chop .. depends if ya have a good cpu , and over 512 ddr ram imo :nodding: Ian
We all agree on 1 thing RTCW ROCKS HEY :p
Performance with the 5500 isn't as expected, but I chalk that one up to the fact that I'm using an 8X AGP card in a 4X AGP slot. Still, I'm pleased with its performance.
I'd created another topic before regarding problems with my video card rendering fog and water properly. It would seem as though I'm still having the same problems. I'm using the PNY GeForce FX 5500 / 128 MB DDR / AGP 8X. Here are some screens to show you guys what the problem is:
Water Issues (Too Bright, Inaccurate Coloring):
Fog Issues (Can Only See Fog's Brushwork - Look Closely):
What's wrong? I'm using the most up-to-date drivers, and I have DirectX9c installed. I know that everything used to display properly before, so I can't understand why it isn't doing it properly now.
What kind of card did you had before this one? What sometimes happens (so I heard) is that if you replace your video card with a new one then some of the old drivers will conflict with the new drivers or at least graphical problems might happen. I always uninstall my drivers. Then in safe mode remove any old files that might still be on my system. Programs like Nasty file remover can remove that safely. Then reboot and install the latest drivers for your new card.
