Man, I'm not liking the sounds of all these problems. I seem to recall the original STALKER CTD'd every 5 minutes too, unpatched. Surely GSC would have learnt their lesson by now?

sasha;456226364 could be the problem. mine still doesnt work properly. i try to force install the xml2 service pack and sp1. nothin.

I'm using XP Pro 64 which can be a bit problematic with some games, although Vista is a 64bit OS so you'd think that developers would be able to cope with it by now.

The annoying thing is that the game works fine for a while and just as I am starting to get into it, it CTD's. So I don't really know if I like the game or not, I just know I don't like the bugs.

RE: Your problem - is it with Vista? Microsoft don't support SP1 (and it won't self install) if you have certain drivers for other things (mostly non-MS hardware) installed.

There's a list here: MSFN - You can't install Vista SP1 via Windows Update?

your problem is XP64. It is built off of windows server2003 and is really not the best for games. I remember running ShOC on XP64 and I had crap FPS and CTDs.

Check your temps. of CPU & Video card. I had some heat problems with one of my main PCs from ShOC and it would CTD or give me GSC's BugTrap thingy every once in a while when running the game for long periods of time, especially when the fire fights got hot and heavy. Turns out was a heating problem with my hardware and I was able to fix it. Runs great now. But yeah 64-bit OS really isn't all that great for games. I wish it were, we're at that stage now with 64-bit where games should be much more evolved then they are, but hey tell the game developers that. Plus I think if it came down to Gamers needing to get a 64-bit OS to play there fav. games and know the stability is there, people would do it since a majority of all PC gamers build their own setups.

I've been running ShOC on XP64 with no problems at all. I do have a 9800 and 4GB of ram though, so it should be ok. I'm used to 64 bit OS and Windows server 2003; I manager servers for a living.

I'm covered on the overheating (I love cooling; my case has 5 fans and water cooling, even my ram is water cooled). I did eventually find the fault: Clear Sky doesn't like my 7.1 setup.

I switched to plain stereo and it's stopped nearly all the CTD problems.

Problem is: Now I can play the game, I'm not really enjoying it.

Ah cool, nice one. I never had much luck with it myself.

Like most MS products it doesn't really work until you've spent ages fiddling with the config, making unofficial changes to the registry to fix things that Microsoft can't be bothered with and shutting off pointless background services. Also SP2 for it was only released late last year but it made a lot of difference to it's stability.

Sadly we all seem to accept that if we are using something from MS the best we are going to get is "not guaranteed to work all the time".

Well if anyone is interested in possibly selling me their copy of CS, or can find me a good place in the UK to buy it from online, let me know. Myself and couple friends are looking for a copy, long as it's the Collector's Edition.

I'm not so sure about the collectors edition - I can't seem to find it anywhere. You can, however, get a cheap copy of Clear Sky (sealed) here: Store. - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky (PC DVD)
