I believe it means when its equipped (in inventory) it beeps for radiation and approaching anomalies. But when you press your key to take it out (and hold it in your hand) thats the 2nd mode where it will beep or visually point/show you where the artifact is.

Again that is just a description of the item itself. What EDGAR stated is all correct. In fact if you think about it, the item desciption is correct (in a way). When you don't have the item in-hand, the antenna would be lowered, thus will only help you detect anomolies and radiation, everything except artifacts. Pulling the item out and having it in-hand. Raises the antenna, thus increasing it's detection ability, but again all it does is allow you to then detect artifacts with it and help guide you to them. Depends which detector you have. All work exactly the same for the detection beeps you hear for detecting anomolies and radiation. But the 3 detectors work a little different. The first one you start the game with gives off a visual light and beep, but only helps as you get closer to the artifact. Think of it as playing HOT / COLD. The 2nd detector will give a visual direction to guide you towards the artifacts. The 3rd detector will give you a radar-like screen that pinpoints on the screen exactly where the artifact is from your position.
