I'm running Vista Ultimate and this is what I do, XP is the same, I think ? Go to 'my computer' and right click on the little diagram showing how much space you have used ( it will probably have "local disk C" printed over it). Click on "properties" and then on "tools". You will then see the heading "error check", click on this and a little box will come up, put a tick in both boxes and click OK. Accept any boxes which request a change to the Registry. A box will tell you that you have to schedule an error check so just click OK. Restart your computer and the check will start, this can take quite a few hours so it's best run overnight. Your system defrag is rubbish, download or use a free cover disk to get yourself an "Auslogics Disk Defrag", it's one of these where you get to see the process, like they were many years ago. After 4 hours of using the one which came with Vista this one still found more files to defrag.
