After reading so many tragic tales I will give you an almost painless route. Everyone seems to be concentrating on going to Cordon by using one of the two routes pointing towards the place, look north and take that route. You can avoid all opposition by going through the middle of the swamp and over the railway tracks to the next sector. The Agroprom research institute houses Duty soldiers which like in the original game are friendly. Any extra guns etc. can be sold at the traders. Go to the building with a guy standing by an open door, just inside is a stash with a ton of free ammo and food. Go back to the trader and spend most of your money (you will be robbed on the way to Cordon by Bandits so no point in carrying a lot of cash). Leave by the main entrance and head down the road towards Garbage. When you have cleared the wrecked vehicles head right towards a sector changer. You will come out in Garbage and after taking a few steps will be challenged, do not try and fight just follow the bandits orders and hand over your cash. Sprint through their camp and head for the Cordon sector changer (there will be another bandit camp to go through first). Before going through the sector changer arm your best weapon because you come out into a house. There are 4-5 guys to take out and I found the easiest way was to set my AK on single shot(more accurate), run into the small lit room on the right, get into the corner, crouch down, and pick them off when they try to get you. Check where the target (the Trader) is and continue towards him. You cannot sneak all of the way there because a long line of barbed wire is in the way. The stalkers at the stalker camp are friendly and will let you through (go to the back of their camp and walk up the two ladders to the top of the roof, then jump off over the back), but the stalkers at the tunnel will not. There are 4-5 (or more ?) of them and I crept near but not too close and lobbed a couple grenades, then crouched and played cat and mouse with them, be careful, you will think you have them all and walk in only to find more shooting at you, if you take your time doing this bit there should be no probs. There is another stash full of goodies. Don't worry about killing these stalkers because no-one knows it is you, in fact they think it is bandits. Carry on through the tunnel and to the Trader. Taking this route means that you will only encounter the type of situations you know how to deal with and not face that crazy gunfire you get from taking the other exits from the swamp.

I actually just used the north route at night, with a nightvision-equipped suit. The renegades are easy to sneak around if you go off of the main road.

It's like anything else I guess, it works good for some. I found me an AK-74 in Swamp and Upgraded it to full accuracy rating and also found the PSO-1 scope in a green box up in one of the towers in the center of the swamp. So I picked off any Military who got close to me when I entered Cordon the normal way (that let's out near the Military base). I just saved before having to make a run down and to the left behind the large downed tree and up towards Sid (Cordon Trader). If I got gunned down by the PKM I Just loaded it back up. No big deal really.

That's the bit I forgot - I went at night

thanks for the tip on the scope, I'll go back to the swamp to get it.

Yeah it is a large watch tower pretty much in the center of the swamp. There is an open green crate, like the ones they ship weapons in. It wasn't your normal stash or metal case you break open. The crate was open and the PSO-1 scope was in there. I didn't even see it but I was holding F key when I was up there and the name popped up. Also I wanted to know... how can I not take the normal route to Cordon. I mean all the others say I need a guide to use the passage. Yet the only passge the guide will take you through is the tunnel one that let's you out near the Military base? I've read your guide, but some of it isn't making sense to me, sorry. I see your point, as I did find the railroad tracks in the very beginning after killing off all the Bandits, except they continuously spawn at the middle north camp just down the hill from the tracks and of course the camp to the far right corner. I passed over the tracks and went to head north but it says I can't without a guide. BTW the Bandits won't rob you in Garbage if you kill them ;) ~ I did when I went to Garbage from Cordon. As I saved it soon as I got to Garbage, I stepped up and they took EVERYTHING I HAD, and left me with some 9x19 ammo and basic PMM pistol. I was like WTF, so I loaded back up and killed em all.

What you have to do is use the guide who leads you to the military base, then go back to the swamps and use the northern route that leads you to the railroad embankment. That's how I did it. The only problem is that the renegades have ambushes set up along the main nothern road, and a small base next to the northern entrance. Go at night, go offroad and sneak around the base that they have.

LOL I just kill them all. No big deal with my fully upgraded AK74. I don't even bother using a suit yet either. The game has been pretty easy thus far with fighting and so forth. I will try it all again on MASTER skill level soon to see. Maybe it's just me. Anyways yeah after playing some more I realized what you all are saying and how it works. You can get to Duty area quickly as long as you go before they tell you to use the guide in the Swamp to go to Cordon. No real point to this as it's a good idea to clear out the Swamp as best you can first before going further. Anyways, thanx for all the input. I was like HUH!? Then I thought oh yeah no reason I can't come right back to the Swamp and then go to North Cordon entrance or Agroprom Research.

Actually the best way to get into the garbage with using the least amount of ammo and to stop you from being robbed is to not use the main garbage entrance that we are familar with.

Instead use the entrance that is to the west of the netural stalker base. going in through that pipe line will net youi with just 1 squad of poorly armed bandits compared the 2-3 heavyily armed squads at the main entrance.

Another longer one is to side track through the Dark Valley. No bandits whatsoever through it's access points to the garbage.
