I am trying to create some new items for clear sky but don't know how to edit the images. For example, If I took an existing suit and wanted to change the colors and add an image of a helmet or gas mask on on it, what tools do I use. I was able to open it up in photoshop and add the grid lines correctly and figured out how to count out the grid for the grid part in the ltx files. Second, could I take a screenshot of a item, like a helmet and paste it on the suit, might not be that great quaility. So what are my options as adding new images to existing ones or creating completely new ones. Is there a way to open a mesh file and capture the the helmet that way, and shink it in size so it has the 3d look to it and then add it to the ui_icon_epuipment. I have no idea if this is possible, so if it sounds dumb its because I have never done this. I am also looking for x ray exporter Stalker .ogf plugings for 3ds max 10, I can't find them anywhere.

Yo dude!

If you're new to moddng, this next bit might sound hard, but its easy once you ge the hang of it... And its really not that complicated.

Unless you want to create a COMPLETELY new and unique item for Clear Sky, id suggest stay away from all the 3D Studio jazz! Rather look for Notepad ++ or you can use normal notepad to edit the ogf file. Id recommend Notepad ++ tho! in the ogf file there is easy references to the textures used. If you want to send me your email addy via private message, and ill email you notes, or i can upload em here, whatever... Its actually quite easy with Notepad, just need to know what to look for and that you pick up quickly. With this method i've made armors, weapons, ammo, even custom grenades. Ive used existing mesheds but they work 100%.

As for the inventory file:: In photoshop set your Grid like this: Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Guides, Grids & Slices... In there change Gridline to every 50 PIXELS and sub divisions to 1. Keep in mind the first block (top, left) in your inventory grid is block number 0. the x&y value is both 0. -For your icons: If you have Gimp its very easy. All you do is open your ui_icon_equipment.dds in GIMP and just save it as a PNG, but remember to choose the option not to save the background colors. When you open the PNG in photoshop youll have perfect quality icons. Id suggest save the PNG as a PSD once opened in Photoshop. If you dont have GIMP send me a message with your eamil an ill post or email the PNG. -Another thing: Once you've made your icons you have to save them to your Alpha chanel of your dds file... To do that (in Photoshop) combine the icons you made into one layer. Rightclick on the layer (Layers Tab) and choose "select pixels". now your new icons are selected. Keep them selected, and flatten your image. now righclick on one of your new icons and choose "save selection" where it says new click on the dropdown and select "Alpha1". then make sure the "add to channel" option is selected, and press ok. just save your dds file and thats it! (depending on your dds photoshop plugin, just follow instructions, but when opening the inventory dds file dont load mipmaps!!)

Hope this helps, and write if you need more help.

That sounds great that you can edit the .ogf files using notepad. I would like to know how. I have been experimenting with photoshop more and I am getting the hang of it. But it sounds interesting that you can edit .ogf files with notepad. Yea man, any notes you have about doing this would be great. Sorry for late reply, I post most of my stalker questions on the gsc forums.

Thanks for your help. :)

Thanks

Some of the stuff I already experience with, but I didn't think of of opening the file in gimp and renaming it to a psd, when you open a .dds with photoshop it makes the black background and sometimes if you are not careful it saves the black background and it shows up in your hud. Yea it definately makes sense to back up your files because .dds files have no layers when you reopen them.

I knew how to rename the mesh texture and keep it the same characters, I created a freedom exo suit about 3 weeks ago.

YouTube - Freedom Exo and Seva Hud Mod

There is another method to creating new weapons, it is similiar, but at the bottom of the wpn ltx files there is a section where you can create new weapons and the ak74 already has that section it looks like [wpn_ak74_up]:wpn_ak74 and you can add weapon changes here or upgrades. There is a thread of the gsc forums that goes more indepth.

But I have never heard of notepad++, it sounds much easier to use than regular. That was the problem was having was the order and best way to edit the ui_icons file, I keep messing it up in photoshop or not sure how to add textures correctly. Since you have to mess with alpha channels. Hopefully your guide wih help me edit the ui icon_equippment .dds fast and with less hassle.

Do you mind if I post your guide on the gsc forums, I'll give credit to you. I think it will help other people too.

Thanks again

Well as i said notepad++ is easier, than normal notepad. But its still an all things text editor, not graphic

Im busy trying to add a scope to the mp5. Im gonna try through notepad++ i think it might just work! If it works ill let you know. Im no big fan of the whole 3D studio thing.

I know there is a plugin for gimp 1.something that enables you to edit ogf files directy.

The saving as PSD (or PNG without background color) with the Inventory icons and pretty much any other dds file works well. it enables you to edit the seperade components acurately. The default Alpha channel (as youll see) is "Alpha1".

I dig your Freedom Exo, looks cool. I did one with a cammo I made for Clear Sky. It goes with a .45 VAL and .45 Viper that I call the M2V and Swamp Viper.

I also made cammo for the renegades... Works too well im afraid. You get the crap shot out of you, but dunno where its coming from till you spot the gun flash.

Yes! I would definately want to know how to add scopes and edit ogf files with notepad. Hope it works out. I can't get the files to open in 3ds max or maya, I can't get the plugins to work, it really is a mess. So if you are successfully I would definately like to know how, I have always wanted to add a scope to the ak74u for the heck of it, even a grenade launcher. I thought it would be fun to create it.
