Three areas have been "removed" from the game: ROSTOK, PRIPYAT, &WILD TERRITORY. Technically, they're not "removed" because they still exist in the game, but they are now greyed out & travel there is impossible. Can these areas be opened up again? Are they in the game, but just unaccessible? If they're not in the game, can they be added back in by dropping the old SoC files for the maps into CS?

Well even though the map didnt take them out visually, there is no longer any data in the levels folder for those areas. I very much doubt you can drag and drop the levels in since it would require adding waypoints and such and my guess is that as soon as an NPC will try to change levels it will crash.
So in short, unless perhaps we can get an SDK it would be either extremely difficult or near impossible.
I don't spend enough time here

Yes if an SDK becomes available putting them back in is a must I think.

Pardon my stupidity...I'm new here.... But what's a SDK?
software development kit
Anyways it's not as simple as you think even with the SDK.
The levels are most likely copyrighted and the complications of adding those levels back into CS is also complex. We would have to ask GSC for permission to add those levels back but think for a second:
If they didn't add levels that were already in SoC into CS why would they let modders do it?? So GSC is 99.9% likely to NOT let us add those areas back.
And then this could be avoided by requiring people to have SoC to play rostok, pripyat, and wild territory but thats another problem arises. How the hell are we supposed to force people to need SoC?? We could have CS require a specific gamefile inside SoC but then problems could arise with clever people cracking that file open and using just that file.
So in laymans terms: 99.99% impossible to add the areas back.
I want to be like the Admins

I miss the old zones. Rostok, Pripyat, old Red Forest (thats right, the red Forest we have here is much smaller and none of it's the old zone. The Barrier still exists at the Military Warehouses, but its now a critical psi-emission area that will literally kill you in 2 seconds).
In any case, I do think that adding in new zones are possible somehow. Its one of the biggest mod projects that one can undertake, but some are attempting it with SoC. I dunno how legal it would be to recreate some of the missing levels from scratch (I personally doubt its a good idea), but its a thought.
Creating new area's from scratch....
Look at the development time in CS.....
Faction wars = only 4-6 weeks at the most because it was already implemented by modders in SoC
New armor = only 1-2 weeks maybe even less
New gun = only 1 week
New AI "cover, tactics, movement paths" 2-3 months.
Scripting events: 4-6 weeks
Dialouge and story: 2-3 weeks
New "environments" Swamp, red forest, lemisk. A very long time.
It is NOT possible to just recreate area's without the SDK.
IF we had an SDK then it would take so freaking long to recreate rostok, WT, pripyat that clear sky would be dead and done by the time it was ready to be beta tested.
The ONLY way that you could get rostok, pripyat WT into CS is to get permission from GSC and import it from SoC and that is 99.99 impossible because if GSC didn't include it in CS from the first place why would they let modders do it?
I'm too cool to Post

Yeah it's bar and wild territory.
btw did you encounter any crashes trying to add level changers to pripyat?
