I've noticed I haven't seen any DRM threads on here, and I was just wondering what your views were on the subject.

Clear Sky (even on Steam) has a 5 install limit DRM. After that, you must request serials from GSC. While you can argue the fact that requesting wouldn't be too much trouble, let me assure you, it is.

I paid $40 some dollars with taxes for this game to own on Steam. Notice the keyword "own". I did not however , pay to rent this game. And that is exactly what DRM is doing.

Again, you can say that asking for a new serial is not too much of a big deal, but if I'd known that is what I would of had to do before purchasing, I wouldn't of purchased. And believe me, I LOVE the Stalker series. SoC is my favorite game of ALL time, but I cannot support DRM.

Also I wanted to note that Steam did not warn the customer about the install limit until receiving dozens of tickets about it. Now they warn the user in very small text in the bottom right of the screen on the store page:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky on Steam

And on top of that all threads concerning DRM are blank on GSC's forums.

GSC Game World - Official Site

Please chime in on this, I would like to see different opinions on the matter.

As far as I know, the TAGES system on the retail boxed versions just has no-copy areas of the disk (they do something funky during mastering), this limit you mention only effects the download version. Maybe it is because of the more distributable nature of the d2d game (rather than an as yet copy protected disc). Surely, as long as you are a registered user*, then requesting a new serial will be no bother. Possibly a note for future STALKERS: fetch out your disc detector, get some supplies ready and go for a stroll to the shop!

(*Note the keyword "user" - in the same way with music and films, you never "own" a game - you are licensed to use it. Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine. The first few lines of the EULA - the "Grant of License" section should help clear things up.).

This is the first I have heard of any install limit for the game, and I've been following it pretty closely.

And if you look at GSC's forums, ALL the threads are empty... Looks like a database issue

They seem fine now, have another look.

Must be just you, cuz all threads are empty for me

Also, anything dealing with copy protection would be Deep Silver, GSC wouldn't have much to do with that.

Install limits on Steam?! Well that's stupid... What they've should've done is use steam as their "Primary" distribution, they don't have to make a big fuss with pirates if they do that.

Heck along with that idea, and release a sdk for stalker on steam too.

There's a petition for Deep Silver, valve, GSC, Tages, whoever to change/remove the limit. It's not much, but it's a start. Remove Activation Based DRM From STALKER Clear Sky Petition : [ powered by iPetitions.com ]

Why won't they understand that when you own a game on steam, it cannot be played unless you log on... There's no possible piracy in that.

Maybe its for the DRM's profit? Like the DRM company can pay the developer/publisher to put DRM in their games?

I played CS about a year ago.... until my disk was corrupted, apparently Tages needs to read the disc constantly, which can lead to that happening but I haven't seen any threads about that :(
