How exactly do you do this? To join duty I get told to go speak to some guy at the main base, but the dudes at the entrance won't let 'outsiders' in and there's no option to ask to join. Same with Freedom, I've done a bunch of missions for them but still no option to join the faction? any ideas guys?

Yeah you have to do the main storyline to the point you have to go to "the bar". At this point you can tell the guy who says "no outsiders" that you have business with the guy in the bar, and he lets you through.

I joined freedom, not sure how i did it. Now trying to get to the bar is like running a bullet gauntlet.

I think you have to do so many missions for them, and then you are in like flynn

Does this actually change your grouping? Like does it change from loner to Freedom or Duty? I've been reading that you don't actually join, you more or less just work missions for them (like a contractor), and your reputation increases but thats all. You don't become a part of their actual group - Is this is way it is, or does your grouping actual reflect the faction?

It changed my grouping to "Freedom", now Duty guys shoot on site. I have wasted a lot of ammo trying to just go places now

sooo for those who have played the game thru... is it better to join Duty or Freedom? Duty seems to be all over the place in the first 3/4 of the game i have played so far, and if i were to join Freedom it seems it would make passage around hard... so any ideas? do you join? or does the game just change you once you have done enough for one or the other?

Spoiler: Show

I ended up heading north from the bar (currently heading to x16, but wanted to check out Freedom first) and it was pretty cool to see the Duty ambush on the Freedom fighters. I ended up talking to a Duty commander named Skull, who then offered me a mission to take out Freedom's sniper. I accepted, I took out the sniper and then fought my way out of the Freedom base, who have now become my enemy. Duty was just outside, which was a relief as I had a number of Freedom fighters on my ass. I hear on the radio; "great job stalker, now return to me for the reward". This was a msg from Skull. As I return to the base (or camp, just outside of the Freedom base) I notice there was a massive battle and most Duty troops are dead. I search around for Skull and find out he too is dead. He's right in the middle of an anomaly field. Great! Now what?

So my question is, is this the Duty faction bug people are talking about, that prevents you from joining Duty? Or should I load my save file (saved before killing the Freedom sniper just to be on the safe side) as this was perhaps just a random event?

Doh! Just when I thought I was getting somewhere with Duty, lol. :uhoh:

I saw a pretty cool Duty & Freedom battle as well on my way to pripyat...all of em were in that giant space suit like armor. I hadn't joined either of them so I just ran around picking up dead Duty/Freedom stuff :p

IMO, don't "Join" either of them but do a mission or 2 from them.

I think the 2nd mission from Duty commander will get you a nice VAL sniper rifle. Once I got that I just stopped doing stuff for Duty..... The Freedom boss gives you a nice artefact after his 2nd mission too...reduces radiation by 30 and takes away 18 endurance.. (though that doesnt matter to me since I've stacked 2 flash artefacts and have infinite sprint). Works well with the suit the science guy gives you in Yantar after getting out of X16.

Freedom hold most of the area on the way to pripyat so if you align with duty then you will struggle later. I still managed to shoot my way through freedom though to get to pripyat. I would say it would be best to stay neutral if you want to play without being attacted by either faction. It is more fun if you have the factions shooting at you though :) The choice is yours.
