yeah i've seen those, they look cool. i just want to play thru the game fully once (i'm up to the endgame) before i mod it. i guess youre right, since the vehicle files are actually in the code, they should work right. at first i was deterred because the mod that puts vehicles back into the game was... 3 mb???

Actually Freeplay rankings would be a totally cool idea and a bit like MP, but with one huge IF. IF the rankings involve actual competition from the bots and their awareness of our ranking, rather than trying to fool us into thinking there is any by leaving the bot's stats and aggression level static. I mean why the heck not GSC, UT2003 tracked fluctuating bot stats, every installment of Ghost Recon has had it? Keeping track of fluctuating bot stats is not rocket science, and with the unrestricted nature of A-Life, I tend to think it would make for an interesting time. Think about it, fluctuating bot stats and rival battles between the top contenders would and could become a reality if they'd just key the AI into an awareness of it. STALKERs that actually stalk YOU and vice versa, now that would be cool. I would like to further suggest a method by which you could track one STALKER at a time by clicking on his name in the stat list and seeing him appear on the map as a mobile purple marker with the AI doing the same. If they were smart they would have thought it out this way in the first place and included it in the game as a mode after completion rather than it being an underwhelming afterthought. Underwhelming if the bot stats and their awareness of your stats remain static/non existent anyway, which is probably what they'll do. Also, most players by the end of the game easily have enough ranking to be in the top position, so Freeplay Mode would have to start from a clean slate to really be a challenge. In fact, tracking your ranking against static stats of others is kinda pointless, they shouldn't have even had that as part of the stock game if they were going to leave the other's static.

i have to say i agree with you there omen, does seem like a pointless endevour (sp?) to include rankings with no reward or noticeable impact on the storyline.

It's an entirely arbitrary system, as it stands currently. I actually got into the top spot, without realising it, before even setting foot in the bar.

I didn't realise it because there was no in-game change of absolutely anything. Noone worshipped me, noone knew me (apart from somehow all calling me Marked One), noone praised me on being the best Stalker in the Zone. People still said "Rookies like you" in their conversations, and others told me I'm not welcome.

It's like a "percentage complete" meter in most videogames that include it. It's just there. It has no effect on anything.

Allow me to quote something:

"We're preparing a big update with a new game mode - Freeplay, with no story tasks, including only the A-life driven ones, where the goal is to gain ranks, climb up in rankings, so as to become the best S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in the Zone."

To be honest, they say the only goal in the new "update" will be to just rise in ranking in the zone. It happens anyway in the current game, so unless they plan on RADICALLY altering that aspect of the game, it's useless. It would be like if they made Shenmue 3, but it's exactly the same as Shenmue 2 in every way (indeed, it's the exact same game), but with the storyline taken out, and your only goal is... to talk to people.

Or if they made Downloadable Content for Grand Theft Auto IV, where your goal is to drive a car.

You can do all these things in the main game already, so why make a new mode that takes AWAY features, rather than adding new ones?

Well, being as you act on your own or decide to join a faction, I'm not wanting anyone to praise me for rising in the ranks unless I align with them, do a quest for them, or have business to take care of beyond a gate they're guarding. In fact, I really don't want praise so much as respect. With highest rank in such an environment, it's enough if they just step aside, look at you with trepidation, or just remain silent. In fact I WANT some if not most of them to resent me for it and try to challenge me. This is an every man for himself game for the most part, and I'd rather it stay that way if for nothing else to give you the best chance of being against all odds if and when you want more challenge. The only real hint of respect you get in the stock game is when you enter Pripyat and you hear the scripted spiel "You must be the marked one, barkeep told me about you"! At the same time though you really don't get any sense of rivalry from competetive stalkers. I think it's safe to say that much of the lack of sense in the dialouge is due to GSC's language barrier and difficulty translating things, Thus I think for purposes of practicality AND a sense of challenge and suspense it would be best if they just have the respect/rivalry kept to gestures and actions involving very little dialouge unless they can do a better, more consistent job of it. I always thought it was kind of odd how some of the dialouge is verbal but much of it is text. After having played it a fair amount it's easy to see the conversations keyed to your actions that are not part of the main story missions are where they fall into a simple text chat. That is why I think GSC would fail at implenting any rank keyed dialouge well. They seem to cut lots of corners where social interaction with AI is involved. It could be due to complexities elsewhere that limit how much they can practically do with the AI. I learned recently that part of what makes some mods become unstable is when they grow to the point of having lots of looped script functions within them. I wouldn't doubt if the A-Life AI system itself requires lots of looped script functions to do what it does.

Someone too ignorant to know how to spell his unprovoked insults no doubt. :rolleyes: He just joined and the last two posts by him I've read are one word insults without cause or explanation. Clearly someone suffering from emotional issues with a habit of trolling. I think someone needs a new game for Christmas, but can he wait that long? Or maybe he just thinks righties are tighties and lefties are loosers and was guessing as to which the person he responded to so eloquently was. :D Personally I use a right handed mouse but I can't for the life of me steer in racing games via the arrow keys with my right hand. Oh,...I'm sorry, did I stray off this fun and maniacal topic of "loosers"?
