I had that happen too, except the scientist is easy to save actually. What I did was make a save right after the cutscene ends to find the best way to get to the scientist. That ended up being a quick flank to the left around the trains. What's harder than initially getting to him is protecting him as he starts heading to his mobile lab, but it's not really too difficult. I got the feeling the whole family rifle thing is either a setup to get someone to save the scientist or the rifle is vulnerable to being raided like stashes. I pinpointed a spot on the map that exactly overlaid the rifle's supposed position and it was a little green shed with a slanted roof at the end of a long thin green building opposite one of the trains. The rifle was not in the shed, on it's roof, or anywhere around it. It didn't bother me though because I mostly wanted to take on the mission to get the suit I was told was one of the perks of it. It is not a SEVA as I was told however, but instead an SSP-99, which is very good. It protects you 90% from environmental damage. You have to save the scientist though and go to his lab in Yantar to get it. Only bummer is the suit is ugly as sin, you look like a prisoner wearing a big baggy nerf suit.LOL It makes the missions in Dark Valley a whole lot easier though.

I had problems around this area as well...

First off, I couldn't find the rifle (which was what I was initially in that area for). Then, the scientists came along. For me, the lead scientist guy was hiding behind a brick wall. I spoke to him, and he said we should get moving, there's no time to waste. Okay, sounds good...

...Except he didn't move. It seemed like he was stuck there. So, I saved the game because I had to go to the grocery store, and about two hours later, I load it up again and the scientist starts running.

That's all fine dandy, because now I know that the task isn't broken. Leading him to Yantar was actually a cinch, with only a handful of zombies that killed themselves in the fiery tunnels, and a few bandits right before that.

As for the rifle, you're not looking for any sort of 'hidden tunnel'. It's a big tunnel that was used back in the day for traffic/vehicles. Near the chopper, look for the part of the road that starts going downhill, and that's most likely the tunnel. Now just climb your way to the back, avoiding anomalies, and there's his shotgun in that giant, empty cargo container.

There are also some other weapons near a dead stalker, it's the only location where I found the "Big Ben"-pistol in the game. Too bad that pistols are rather useless :)

The Rifle is in a Tunnel. The Tunnel starts where the scientists took cover... It is full with lightning-anomalies but you can jump over the cars and the rifle is at the end...

Okay thanks I'll take a look for it later but I'm wondering if it's too late to save him cause I've done a few missions after his death but I still have the save right before he started running so I'm wondering if its possible to do it again without having to re-do all my missions... If not is it possible to get to his lab without him? Maybe tell me how here? Thanks, ||G||

There's also a desert eagle in that tunnel. But at that point you should have an ak with a scope, a good shotgun, or some other good rifle. Making the pistol useless.

I think it's rather strange that they're calling a shotgun the famly rifle. I can just see the guy trying to kill a deer a hundred yards away with it swearing up and down that it's the way dad taught him to do it.
