It's awesome with certain mods. Depending what you're looking for, but yes it CAN be very scary. Especially with Blood suckers coming after you in the dark.

To be honest it is many games rolled into one. - Play the main story or take side missions like in GTA. - Large environments, but nowhere near as big as something like Oblivion. - Each map is probably about the size of a Battlefield map. - I have jumped more than I did from Doom, though not as often. - The gunfights are good, but not spectacular (not quite FEAR or Crysis). - The RPG elements are quite light, only really about getting better equipment. - No training or levelling up. - Though not as random and free as originally intended it is still a game that will surprise you. - Been playing this for over a year now, and previous poster was correct. There are many good mods around, so try it vanilla, then try some of the big mods (Oblivion Lost, AMK, Rebalanced, Alive, Priboi Story). Many of which add a different flavour. There is even the Run & Gun series which turns it into a hardcore fast paced shooter. Don't want to sound like a fanboy, but go for it, it must be cheap now.

There is going to be a Stalker Prequel and Sequel most likely. This game is very good, and you'll get scared garunteed when you hear a Zombie moan or you mistake a Stalker for a Zombified Stalker.

It's a HARD game though, modded or not. (Sometimes varies on mods) But you will enjoy it if you like Free roaming Post-apocalyptic game.

I would suggest buying and playing Stalker because it is so different. The really big problems with Stalker , are as a result of it's design. It is designed to do as many things all at the same time to create realism , and that it does. In Stalker , there may be as many as 10 things happening all at the same time . For example , near the beginning in the Cordon , the weather is bad. Rain , lightening , darkness falling , wild dogs , mutated cattle , wild boars , army gaurds , other stalkers , inert electrical fields on the ground , radiation , meters clicking , health being run down by radiation , need to find food , drink etc , etc. That is what makes Stalker interesting. I doesn't also warn you or point or prepare you for anything , you have to do it all on your own. You hear footsteps and need to react to the situation. All the while you are also monitoring your weapons , ammunition and even your breathing.

Probably my all time favourite game. It's not just a typical FPS. Its an RPG with a lot less linearity than typical FPS.

Buy it. It's only £7.89 at Play.com :)
