this will prive to be an interesting topic, first lets start with some media.

x-ray. (divx 5.6, 6.0 or win media 10) http://files.gsc-game.com/st/e3_dx9/stk_dx9_hq.avi

ue3. (real player or quicktime .mov required) http://zdmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o1/1UP/unreal3_demo1_Quicktime.zip http://zdmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o1/1UP/unreal3_demo2_Quicktime.zip http://zdmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o1/1UP/unreal3_demo3_Quicktime.zip http://zdmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o1/1UP/unreal4_demo4_Quicktime.zip

comparason --x-ray-- -pros- wide area loading advanced lighting and shadowing non-plastic look great texture support 70% realistic looking large areas best physics ODE engine a fps has seen attention to detail bump mapping character design good optimizer with exelent rendering per graphic level -cons- runs better on high end nvidia cards, nvidia gets extra eye-candy compared to ue3 attention to detail and bump mapping lacks

--ue3-- -pros- 67& realistic looking advanced physics integrated bump mapping reflection refraction character design particle effects fluid objects giving and reciving force large landscapes or city enviroments enhanced textures -cons- performance system minimum requirements

so lets compare them shall we? it seems x-ray will have the slight upper hand in flexibility, and realistic looks. x-ray may certinaly look more real, but UE3 looks almost idenicaly as real. the real factor is based on opinion. it so close it comes down to that. as for large landscapes, i think this is won for x-ray. x-ray lighting might be matched by ue3 finally, ue3 seems to have better lighting and shadowing. in both engines, every object cast and recives a soft shadow. this is down to opinion. the bump mapping is really quite hardcore in ue3, it definalty wins in this area. x-ray, i belive anyway, will render things much better than ue3. ue3 seems to have a higher standard in system requirements, also people with nvidia will be quite pleased with fps/settings ratio. dont feel down ATI, ati's new line up in cards x1800's have better image quality and AA control over 7800's, in x-ray, the 7800's and 6800 u's will still get the extra eye-candy. ue3 has some facinating particle effects, energy, water, its AGEIA physics chip ready, so particle effects goes to ue3.

score after carefull comparison

engine:.....................|----xray----||----UE3----| wide area landscapes..|-----1------||-----0-----| rendering..................|-----1------||-----0-----| lighting/shadowing......|-----0------||-----1-----| real looks..................|-----1------||-----1-----| physics.....................|-----1------||-----1-----| water (at this time).....|-----0------||-----1-----| character design.........|-----1------||-----1-----| flexibility....................|-----1------||-----0-----| weather effects..........|-----1------||-----1-----| particle effects...........|-----0------||-----1-----| reflection/refractoin.....|-----0------||-----1-----| bump mapping.............|-----0------||-----1-----| force and gravity.........|-----1------||-----1-----| textures.....................|-----1------||-----0-----| overall.......................|-----9------||-----10----|

i just had to give x-ray the winner in textures for the fact it looks more real. although it may not be as advanced. well, these are some of the facts i have managed to dig up...

conclusion: i favor x-ray over UE3 for its flexability, and texture quality. looks a bit more real even though it might not be as advanced. UE3 will give it a run for its money, but as soon as we get stalker we can better understand x-ray and its hidden features it hides. until then, this whole thing is somewhat moot.

DISCUSS!!!!

There are soo many incorrect statements in what you've just said. Don't do comparisions unless you got the real answers, other than the vids. Because you are just preparing yourself to get flammed, and I am not up to spend 15 mins just to make a solid reply about what's true, and what isn't.

maybe it was the video, it had the doom3 look to me, but that opinion, basicly everything in the first post is almost opinion, it comes down to what you like. diffrent styles indeed.

Both are good engines made for differnet applications. The x-ray engine is made for more "realism" but stalker is the only game I know that used it. U3 is going to be used in a ton of games but it needs the high end stuff to look good. U3 has more emphasis on light reflecting off of textures, but x-ray has equel empashis on everything though.

You know guys I hate to say this but it's really been emotional quite lately. First I got flammed by "Caption" Amerika-my-ass out of nothing on my MOUT thread and now this. Well do you have any proof on whether which outruns which in that statements of yours, cshacker? Because we can't judge the performance of the game alone just by viewing the videos alone. So if the resolution of the video is low does that realkly mean that the game's crap? I know nuts about Unreal 3. But if you were to compare, you must have something like a benchmark or anything...... Sniper-X: you know being emotional is a big no-no with snipers.... you on period or something?
