This is quite simple. I have never ever ever times 10000 modded anything before. I have an advanced understanding of computers, but actual programs easily confuse me. I want to use Oblivion Lost, But the directions are to vague.
For instance it says to change the fsgame file to true true. I do that, but it won't let me save it. A mini-screen comes up when I hit save that says 'Cannot create the c:\program files (x86\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-Shadow Of Chernobyl\fsgame.ltx file Make sure the path and file name are corerct" And gives the ok option. What should I do there? And then I am supposed to with the directions that say 'Copy the contents of the package to your Stalker Gamedir. What is a gamedir?
Basically explain it to me as if I was a moron, because when it comes to programs, I kinda am. Ty in advance. Specs are to follow.
Stalker SOC retail version with patch 1.005 and 1.006 Windows Vista 64-bit Q6600 2.4 gig quad core, 4 Gigabytes of ram, A ATI 4850 video card, And up to date on all drivers. ty
I can't directly help you because I don't have Vista, either 32-bit or 64-bit. But the usual reason you can't write to the game's directory (gamedir) is because this is not allowed by default in Vista.
You would have to change the permissions on the game's installation directory to permit you to install the mod and make the fsgame.ltx change.
Alternatively, you could uninstall the game, then reinstall it to a directory that already has this write permission, like your Documents folder.
If you re-install, I don't recommend patch 1.0006 unless you are running widescreen; some say it improves the HUD for widescreen. Huh -- I don't recommend patch 1.0006 even then. It's mostly a multiplayer patch, and introduces some single-player bugs. If you are going to play OL, you won't be playing multiplayer.
I didn't make it!
Well, best way with Vista is to turn UAC off while you are doing the fsgame.ltx. You do that in the control panel/security center. Then you can change and save.
Ok ty, And what about the gamedir folder? Another set of instructions I have said to paste something to a game data folder. But I have like 13 gamedata things in the stalker folder. Which one do I use? Or am I just throwing it in among them, And not IN any of them? ty
Another way to change/edit any file in the gamedata folders is to right click on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl folder and click on properties then the security tab. Then scroll down to find Users (yourname-PC Users). Click edit and check the first tab which should be Full control and all the tabs below should be automatically checked to allow as well.
And those gamedata files you mention are the game data files compressed. Don't bother with them, you can't open them anyway without the extractor. Just copy over the gamedata folder from Oblivion Lost into the C:\Program Files\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl folder.
Sweet, Ty guys. I will try it and report on how far I got.
TY guys I think I have it all done. I did everything like I was told and started up Stalker. I have a new start screen and when I exited it asked me if I really wanted to run from the man made hell. I exited the game before I started a game because I want to be sure that is it. I don't want to start the game when I was supposed to do something else and mess it up. Am I all set to play then? And ty for all the help.
Sounds like you're ready to go.
Alrighty. Thank you all for the hep. I know I sounded like a moron but I have never messed with a programs files before and didn't want to break something.
