all that tells me is how to make new guns, I want to know how to make ammo types.
It tells you also that ammo is found in weapons\weapons.ltx There is more than just weapon creation in the thread.
I was thinking of creating a new type of sniper ammo for Dragunov or perhaps to some assault rifles. My idea was making a high-velocity round with better piercing effect and damage, but lot less stopping power. Bullet would also travel a lot faster than regular bullets. Downside would be much higher recoil, you could only fire aimed single shots, and if possible, they could damage the weapon really fast (as the rifle isn't meant to handle high pressures in the barrel) but I don't know if it's possible to have weapon go in bad condition just with ammo types. I think everything else about these high-velocity rounds would be easy to do. I don't know if these high power rounds exist in real life, who would be crazy enough to fire them, but I know Dragunov has a setting in the gas piston that gives more pressure in the barrel and gives power to the bullet, but that is not recommended for extended use (as it will break the weapon with used too much).
I think what does damage to the weapon is "impair". A variable in the bullet setting sections. The higher the worse.
Hmm. I think I've done now, I have a new ammo type in weapons.ltx, I've added its name and description in the xml file, I've even added that ammo types to ecolog, barman and trader files, but I cant see it in their inventory (currently I'm at Yantar and I'm hoping I could buy them from Sakharov) Do I have to start a new game to see those new rounds in their inventories, or is there any way to spawn them somewhere?
You should be able to buy them if you added them to the trader files. I have problems with that often too. Try to add them not only to [supplies_start] but also to [...sell_start] etc. Also check the console for errors.
PS: You have to add your new ammo to gamedata\config\mp\mp_ranks.ltx to prevent crashes when you use the ammo and get killed.
I've added the new ammo type to most of the traders and in every section of those trader files, but I still can't see them. Perhaps i'll have to complete missions so those "supplies_after_xxxx" will come true -> some new weapons and stuff will appear in their inventories, WITH my new ammo. When starting a new game I can buy new ammo from Sidorovich, so i know it works.
Those new high-velocity rounds leave bigger hole in a wall, and they do more damage, however I can't seem to make them so that they damage the weapon more. I have tried several different values to "impair" variable, with no effect. Also it seems there is no way changing bullet speed in bullet properties, you can do that only by directly editing the weapons. I did try using some of the weapon's variables but with no effect. It would be cool if weapon recoil and bullet muzzle speeds would be controlled directly from ammo properties. (if there is a way, please tell me :) )
I guess I could make my new HV rounds just a lot more expensive or rare, to compensate over-using them, as they do make the game easier. My idea was that they were regular rounds but with more powerful gunpowder mixture, simple and cheap to manufacture, for those who need serious power but can't afford better weapons. Downside would be higher recoil and the fact that weapons don't stand that kind of ammunition very long, they jam/break down etc.

No. The [supplies start] section is called even if you didn't do anything in the storyline and changes should be seen in game instantly. Just play a bit more with the trader files. It can be a pain in the ape but sooner or later it will show up correctly. Take a look at the other values in the sections and use the same numbers.
Someone should make a tutorial on trader files. I never understand how to change them correctly. Always trial and error.
