If this question has been successfully addressed elsewhere in the forum then please redirect me to it so we can all save some bandwidth.

Anyhow... I have gotten more or less used to interpreting the crashdumps that are provided via BugTrap and use them to help fix any fatal errors that arise when modifying data within the \gamedata\ structure. My question is this:

What are some solutions to help interpret where the error might lie when the game initializes normally but then hangs at the phase of the level load sequence? There are no error messages, not crashdumps (that I can find), and sometimes hitting escape will return to the start screen and at other times it will quietly crash the entire game.

If anyone has a clue as to where I should start looking for errors (whether in a bad scripting link, XML typos, or simply a missing chunk of text) then I am all ears...

Cheers!

I hate those errors. They are the hardest to fix. I usualy get them after editing descriptions. But I have gotten them cause of other things too. Simplist thing to do would be to poke around the files you last messed with and look over everything. It might take a while but thats the price you pay for making your stuff and getting to play with it too. XD

One thing i forgot to add! Right after it crashes open up a word document and paste. Sometimes this works sometimes it dosent. If it works then you should get a report in the same layout as the bugtrap thingy, from there you can fix your problem. If not then you will prolly get something that says something about a stack trace error.

Thanks for the input, Bando144, but you seem to have misunderstood my position a little...

A) I know how to read a BugTrap error. I said so in my original post.

B) Advising me to "poke through files I last messed with" to determine the error is like advising a mechanic to "look under the hood and see if anything looks wierd" when diagnosing strange engine troubles. In other words, I am a little past that stage in the troubleshooting procedure already...

C) Encountering errors in the game is not a "price to pay for making stuff and getting to play with it too." There are enough examples of people encountering errors in the game on a clean install to completely invalidate that somewhat patronizing assumption. Further consider that I have been tweaking the files in this game for as long as I have been playing it, and have already accepted (and taken responsibility) for any glitches that have been due to my own actions.

D) If I wanted to interpret dumped files I would just open up the crashdumps/errorlogs which can be found in either the STALKER-SHOC folder or the original install folders, depending on where the problem originated. As explicitly stated in my original post however, I am not talking about a crash; I am talking about a "hang" which I can manually exit from by hitting the [ESC] key. The engine does not log this as a crash, and it does not go through BugTrap.dll.

One thing I forgot to add!

I was asking for advice on a slightly more practical level.

Haha, thats funny that you say that about engines. Cause it usualy works on race cars. lol. I understand your position. Im just telling you what I do to fix those problems. I have encountered that "hang" many times. And I have only encounterd them from editing descriptions. But I will let someone else help you with your problem. Someone who will give you advice on a more "practical level".

No sweat, Bando. I pretty much have it under control now... It seemed to have fixed itself after I adjusted the syntax in the character_desc_escape.xml file.

So you and I are both on the same general track here in noticing that the "hang" seems to be directly associated with some sort of syntax or scripting error... But one that is somehow considered by the engine not severe enough to warrant a full crash.

*shrug* It's almost ironic that the game itself has so much potential (and is fun as hell to play!) 'cos the Xr_3DA engine has got to be one of the most back-asswards, tempermental and quirky projects that I have ever tried to work with.

I think you got it right. The "hang" with no error msg or just "stack trace" is usually related to .xml files (so, yeah, scripting errors) -- it seems they load even before the bugtrap is able to collect info. To me it happens most often in the weapons descriptions when missing a proper syntax. Funny, you can have all kinds of errors in those files (wrong names, wrong path) but the hang will occur only on a syntax error (like missing a string closure, etc). Oh well  .

Hey, you and giv_em_hell were working on some new weapons textures ... what happened? Haven't seen giv_em_hell for quite some time around here  .

Funny thing that... I haven't really seen him much lately either.

As far as combining our material together to make a weapons reskin pak, I don't know if it will happen quite like that. It would have been more of a weapons add-on collection, as there are also completely new scope reticles and the coding for them, new individuated player-arm textures (various camo sleeves, realistic skin tones, etc), "unique weapons" based on actual ones such as the AKM 7.62x39 assault rifle and Glock model handguns, and a slew of new NPC textures that make the world more believable, such as woodland camo for bandits that actually blends with the environment, rookie Stalkers with leather jackets and denim vests, many factions wearing garb similar enough to make it difficult at times to know friend from foe... etc... (especially when a lot of the bandits are wearing the same clothes as cordon rookies!)..

I would like to repackage all of this material with giv_em_hell's superior weapons reskins, and if not then I will just pack up my own modifications as a stand-alone. Either way, it will be a gift for folks who want to experience a more "realistic" immersion into the visual aspects of the character environment.

Keep up the interest and make mention of it in the forums... This is the secret motivating force behind some of us folks' creativity :) It is, after all, meant to be enjoyed by our fellow players...

Thanks for the comment.
