Ok I got the game off of steam (which apprently is messed up for a lot of steam users) and whenever I start the game, I get a "Input out of range" message and the screen turns black, but I can still hear audio from the game. a lot of people recomend changing the vsync in the user.ltx file or just delete the file. One guy recomended that you copy everything in the dataapps file and putting it in the SOC file. None of these have worked so far.

The vid_mode is not properly set for your display.

First, find your STALKER installation directory. Copy the file fsgame.ltx to the desktop. Edit it there with a text editor like Notepad. Make sure the first line has a valid drive and path for STALKER's configuration files on your PC. Examples:

XP: $app_data_root$=true|true|C:|\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC\

Vista/Windows 7: $app_data_root$=true|true|C:|\Users\Public\Documents\STALKER-SHOC\

If you need to change it: Save the file, then go back to your STALKER installation directory and rename the original fsgame.ltx to something like fsgame_ltx.bak. Then copy the modified file from the desktop to the STALKER install dir.

Okay, start the game, wait a bit, and when it displays the blank screen or Signal out of range message (but you hear the music) then press the Q key. This will exit the STALKER game.

Now look in your STALKER configuration files directory, which is defined by the first line in your fsgame.ltx file. See above.

In that directory, open up the newly-created user.ltx file in a text editor like Notepad. Here are some things to look for:

rs_refresh_60hz rs_v_sync vid_mode

Make them look like this, except that you should change the 1280x1024 to the native resolution dimensions of your display if it is different (e.g., 1024x768, 1600x1200, 1320x1080, etc.):

rs_refresh_60hz on rs_v_sync on vid_mode 1280x1024

Save and play. You can now change video options in one of the game's submenus to suit yourself.

Notes:

It is possible that some modern display dimensions are not supported by STALKER. Try choosing one for the file that is able to be displayed by your monitor.

Also, Steam installs can have multiple versions of user.ltx. The game will use the one in the directory referenced by the fsgame.ltx line as discussed above.
