Hi all! I ran into a major problem here that's really freaking me out! I've tried running S.T.A.L.K.E.R. but since my GFX card was unable to handle the game, I decided to uninstall the game by going to "Control Panel", "Add or Remove Programs", etc. Now here's where my problem lies. After uninstalling the game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. wiped out a good chunk of my harddrive off!!! 1.72 GB of space to be exact! Before installation I had 11.4 GB on my harddrive; after uninstalling the game I was left with only 9.68 GB! What is going on here? For good measure I've also deleted the folder where the game was installed the end result remains the same. Is there something in the DVD that's affecting my harddrive that I'm not aware about? My specs are as follows: Operating System: Windows XP (SP1) CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Clock Frequency: 2.66 GHz (266 MHz) System Memory: 256 MB Cache Memory: 512 KB Graphics Card: ATi Radeon 9250 256 MB Any assistance will greatly be appreciated! This is a little tricky.. **scratchs head** I know that when you "delete" a file really all that happens are that the links are severed until the space is needed or somthing else with te same file name is created. Let me have a looksie on the interweb for similar problems and i'll see what i can find. Never heard of anything like that happening before
"Snugglebear on [URL="http://www.hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-722170.html"http://www.hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-722170.html[/url]"] Just because you uninstall something doesn't mean it's gone. Uninstallation is something that each app has to code for itself and most don't do right. You're supposed to completely wipe the reigstry of all entries for your app an delete all files and folders. Most only delete some registry entries and nearly all leave at least a few MB of folders and files behind (most justify this by saying they'll leave config files and installation history in case you want to install it again). If you really want them gone you have to manually delete the folders afterwords.
- Be very carefull When using regedit to uninstall games, I think there might be a walk through for doing it on this forum somewhere, If you norton System Works , the Files could still be in your Norton recycle bin, try emptying your Norton protected Files
Thanks for the quick response, Lawrence.Ahern. I'm not sure what you mean by "be very carefull When using regedit to uninstall games" since I always either use the "Control Panel", "Add or Remove Programs" method or by using the Uninstall application that's in the game folder. Which leads to my next point which I should have stated earlier. Initially, I've used the Unins000.exe application in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. folder to uninstall the game. I lost 1.72 GB because of that. Then to assure myself I wasn't loosing my sanity, I installed the game again but this time I used the "Control Panel" method of uninstallation. In other words, I've lost 3.44 GB of space. I seriously think during installation the DVD (legal copy BTW) is doing something else to my harddrive aside from installing the game. DJ WolfDevil
I very much doubt that the game is corrupting your hard drive, what has happened is that you have unistalled the game twice , so you probably have two versions of the game present on your pc that have been "unistalled" that are still there as the Unins000.exe is obviously not doing its job. i dont want to tell you how to use regedit as if you delete the wrong fiels you can corruot your windows partition. Can anyone else give a regedit Walkthrough for unistalling this game
Since the game takes around 5 GB when fully installed, here's the funny thing: nothing related from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. installation (file folder, STALKER-SHOC, etc.) remained after I unstalled the game. And since I don't have Norton System Works, I've made sure my Temporary Folder and Recycle Bin were empty as well. But even still the GBs remain missing for some reason. DJ WolfDevil
Even tho you cant see it, doesnt mean it isnt still there im afraid.

Which is more reason why I think something happened during the install/uninstall process. DJ WolfDevil
hhm, More why i think the best course of acton would be to uninstall this game manually. In Regedit START --> RUN --> (type) regedit
I went to regedit and the GSC Game World folder was missing, probably deleted during uninstallation. And for clarification reasons, I shouldn't say my GBs "disappeared." Used up by something is more like it. Going to "Tools" tab, "Folder Options...", and having "Show hidden files and folders" activated revealed nothing related to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as well. DJ WolfDevil
